HARRISONBURG - If a proposed amendment by Del. Todd Gilbert, R-Woodstock, is approved, only job applicants who can prove they're citizens or legal U.S. residents could be hired as part of a federal stimulus program.

Gilbert's budget amendment would place the restrictions when hiring for construction positions paid with federal funds under President-elect Barack Obama's proposed jobs program.

Gilbert acknowledged that federal laws already cover this point, but he wants to ensure state employers seeking to build those projects would confirm legal residency of residents through "E-Verify."

E-Verify is a computer database operated jointly by the Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration.

All federal government contractors and subcontractors who receive direct federal money are required to verify the legal status of their employees using this system, Gilbert noted.

But he said those same requirements should apply when the state spends federal dollars on these upcoming projects.

"If federal money comes pouring into Virginia, it is imperative that the General Assembly ensure that we are indeed creating jobs for our citizens and not countless thousands of illegal aliens," Gilbert said in a prepared statement.

Good for them. Hopefully they are the beginning of a long list of many cities, states, and municipalities that are fed up with the federal government aiding and abetting illegal alien thieves to bankrupt our economy.

This shouldn't even be an issue. No illegals should be working in this country, let alone included in the new jobs intended to benefit U.S. citizens.

Of course it shouldn't but there are far too many (especially anchor babies)in our government who feel that illegal aliens of their ethnicity are so special that they are exempt from obeying American laws.

Sadly, you're right. I can't say what I'd like to happen to our government officials, if they give these jobs to illegals.

Isn't it a shame when this is even an issue? Worse still, that there will be people protesting this bill as 'racist'?
Good for Gilbert! If only more politicians take the same stance.

That's okay, I know what you're thinking without having to use my psychic abilities or crystal ball.

Agreed. Their justification of their race based insanity continues . . . .

Isn't this kind of a no brainer? Thought there were 2 or 3 federal laws to stop this sort of thing! I agree though, they will really work to get around any laws, state or federal.

How about people who can prove they're citizens or legal U.S. residents can stay in the country and ALL illegal aliens will be deported immediately! What do we have to have a war within the United States before illegal aliens will be made to obey the laws???
