ROFL! A 'trowel', huh? No wonder you are always talking about building a wall on the border.

Why Skilled Immigrants Are Leaving the U.S. (http://news.yahoo.com/s/bw/20090303/bs_bw/feb2009tc20090228990934 - broken link)
Why should we care? Because immigrants are critical to the country's long-term economic health. Despite the fact that they constitute only 12% of the U.S. population, immigrants have started 52% of Silicon Valley's technology companies and contributed to more than 25% of our global patents. They make up 24% of the U.S. science and engineering workforce holding bachelor's degrees and 47% of science and engineering workers who have PhDs. Immigrants have co-founded firms such as Google (NasdaqGS:GOOG - News), Intel (NasdaqGS:INTC - News), eBay (NasdaqGS:EBAY - News), and Yahoo! (NasdaqGS:YHOO - News).

Great book and great author who has it down.

It seems strange to me that when the US was predominately white, Pre -1965, this was the strongest country on earth. Now, after years of immigration, we are rolling further and further down the slope to the third world. The more immigrants, the worse the country gets for the natives.
One of the reasons why we were ahead of everyone before 1965 was because Europe and Asia were decimated during WWII.
From the top of my head... Albert Einstein, Joseph Pulitzer and Ieoh Ming Pei were all examples of immigrants who helped advanced our nation. Today, many immigrants from different ethnicities contribute to our society. They contribute in research labs at Universities? Clinical labratories at medical centers? Engineering facilities in large corporations?

Don't get me wrong. I am against illegal immigration and feel that companies are indeed abusing the H1B visa program...
but to say that immigration is bad. That is nonsense.
Also, last time I checked... most the people who got us into this current financial mess were caucasian. George Bush, Dick Cheney, Nancy Pelosi, Chris Dodd, Dick Fuld, Angelo Mozilo, your typical wallstreet executive... the list goes on.

Let's try to advocate against illegal immigration, without the anti-brown bashing BS.

Think what you want, but I remember what it was like pre-1965, do you? Inventions and progress is great in some senses, but having a safe and sane nation trumps that, IMO.

In a few years, after Obeyme and his socialistic policies has finished off what once was a great industrial nation, get back to me and tell me how you like living in a nationwide Detroit.

The US simply does not produce enough engineers and scientist anymore. Until we start doing so, which seems unlikely, since kids today just want to get an MBA or work in the NBA, we will need to keep importing them as quickly as we can.

After all, if we dont have them working for us, they are probably competing against us. And we are starting to lose some of those battles...

This simply isn't true. My son began his studies at a major university as an engineering major. Once he got in the thick of it, he found some very disturbing truths. First, that since companies are trying to cut back, they're not employing as many engineers because it's too expensive. Second, since they can hire foreign engineers at lower salaries, the American grads are having difficulty finding jobs in their field. Many have to accept a lower-level position or work in a different field.

Rather than continue as a computer engineering major, he and others were told by his adviser that they would have better prospects and more marketability if they studied Management of Information Systems in the College of Business, instead. There were more jobs and higher salaries in MIS and, since IS managers must train and work closely with people (as opposed to sitting in an office writing computer code all day), AMERICAN workers were preferred for these jobs. Companies don't want someone with an unintelligible accent training workers and giving presentations.

Let's face it, with today's technology and globalization, borders are a thing of the past. Rather than fight it, we might do well to adapt.
