As U.S. Job Opportunities Fade, More Mexicans Look Homeward
"We are thinking of returning to Mexico and want our daughters to have all the rights of Mexican nationals," says Ms. Rivera, whose children are nine, five and three.
After a historic immigration wave, many Mexicans and other Latin Americans are preparing to return to their homelands amid the deepening recession here. Mexicans who reside in the U.S. sought Mexican citizenship for their U.S.-born children in record numbers last year.

This is great news. Hopefully, when they get home, they will put their efforts and energy into demanding a living wage, humane treatment and the same rights that the oligarchies enjoy.

I don't think it's great news that a worldwide depression was needed to ease the illegal immigration, but I agree it's happening. When there are no jobs to be found anywhere it's better to be in your homeland and near family.

May the flood of illegals heading back SOB turn into a Tsunami!
While we are at it: perhaps more than a few Gringo Yuppies who 'depend' on illegal alien labor join the exodus down south as well

I thought that technically US law did not allow dual citizenship. If you apply for Mexican citizen as a US citizen, do you automatically lose your US citizenship. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I think you're wrong. We've argued bitterly on this forum before whether this is "right"..I say it isn't; that citizenship, by definition, involves some concept of "loyalty", and "forsaking earlier entanglements", and swearing loyalty to the United States. I'm SURE that the legal immigration process includes swearing such an oath..(or it DID).
Yet somehow, people feel they can be loyal citizens of two, three, or MORE countries, without any conflict of interest....and today, I'm pretty sure the US Government agrees.
I don't "get" this; I believe it's contradictory and ultimately dishonest, just like becoming "faithfully married" to two or three spouses....it's a contradiction in terms. Yet today, apparently citizenship isn't looked at as a "big thing", like marriage...more like a "small thing", like holding a Visa card, AND a Mastercard, AND an American express card....nobody gets "hurt", because no loyalty is required, nor implied.
And they wonder why we can't get Americans to feel a sense of "duty" anymore.

Yes, I think my brother in law has dual citizenship with germany.I remember when my sister told me , I thought thats not right one or the other. As far as mexico a while back I read an article about a woman whom lost her husband here and the dual pay welfare and his paycheck was now reduced to just the welfare so she went back , get this the mexican gov told her the kids were american and could not go to school there in another words go back to the usa. She did end up getting them in school forgot how it went but her family was big in mexico so she go help from them.
This is great when they leave by themselfs hopefully they will realize how much we dont care to foot the bill and this is why we cant honor them . local goverment, since many are broke will simple not have the cash for them.

That will start to put a dent in the remittances, which is US money the US will never see again.
