Quakers who hid escaping slaves from their rightful owners were
"breaking the law". Slaves who ran away were doing so "illegally."
The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1884 made it "illegal" for any Chinese
person to immigrate to the US. Were these just and moral laws?
Were the slaves wrong for running away and the Quakers for assisting
them? Should the Chinese have obeyed a clearly racist law? Does
anyone have anymore examples of unjust laws that were later
acknowledged as wrong and overturned? There's tons of examples.
Try again.
Mexico and most other countries have strict laws pertaining to unlawful entry-------we Americans have the same right (and obligation) to control our borders.
As for the Black slaves-------they were brought here against their will and they were freed almost 150 years ago.
The Chinese Exclusion Act; that was changed, so your argument is moot.

At the time that there were slaves the Quakers were behaving "illegally". You bought up legality and law. I'm challenging you to think about legality and law.
But if it's too much for you to imagine another time and place with overtones of today
I won't ask it of you. I don't want you to get sleepy... LOL

If you are going to talk like that about American culture then why the hell are you here? If these Asians and Hispanics and Sudanese etc. are of more value in the economy, then why are they leaving to come here? If American culture is as you say, it is in direct conflict with just reasoning. I don't wan't to here about, (oh, it's the situation in these countries with corruption, economic calamities etc.) how it's not these immigrants fault about their home countries. If they are so great, they should easily be able to get their act together and stear their homelands in the right direction. Meanwhile, our tatooed, pierced, high and unemployed Americans will keep our country stable and in command of the planet.
Good point. If these people coming were all that great, then why are their own countries such disasters?
They think they're so superior to all Americans -- yet it's Americans who have built the kind of country so many want to live in, even break the laws to enter.
ArizonaBear, I guess it is safe to say you would have never assisted a runaway slave or hid a Jew in your attic in Nazi Germany or even thrown any tea in Boston Harbor because they were
illegal. We need more men like you...

Now that's a really silly and ignorant comment.
People come here from all kinds of countries for all kinds of reasons, and political refugees in particular have a very good reason for being here...
... but based on your comment I guess Albert Einstein wasn't "that great".
Lots of people throughout history have been refugees, even including Jesus and Moses. The fact is, people often don't have control over what goes on in their homeland and sometimes they are forced to move.

That was in reference to their cultures. Obviously the American culture is the one that provides the best living for most people.
Yes immigrants come here for a variety of reasons, some want to leave behind their cultures and countries and become American, adapt to our culture, be a part of this country.
But for any immigrant group to think it's culture is superior would be rather absurd because they wouldn't need to be fleeing their own and escaping to ours.

I doubt that many political refugees that come here really think their culture is superior to that of the US.
Having said that, I have to add that it's unrealistic to assume that everyone who comes here is going to leave everything about their culture behind and simply instantly assimilate. That has never been the case and never will be. This is why the country is peppered with Chinatowns, Little Italy's etc.
