The Spanish brought horses, true. But they also brought plagues of diseases to which the Native Americans had no immunity, Catholicism (which forever changed Native American society--and not for the better) death, destruction and subjugation.

Yep, those Spanish were a stellar sort of conquering people indeed......
They vent their full fury at the hated gringo, yet do not seem to feel any antipathy towards the Spanish who came close to wiping them off the face of the earth. It is strange isn't it?

I have just finished reading a book on the impact infectious diseases have had on the course of history. When the Spanish landed in the New World they brought with them dozens of microbes from the Old World- smallpox, measles, German measles, flu, diphtheria, scarlet fever, typhoid, whooping cough, dysentery, mumps and meningitis. The indigenous people had not previously been exposed to any of these diseases and had zero immunity. Within 50 years of the arrival of Cortez, it is estimated that an astonishing 90% of Native Americans had died. The population plummeted from 30 million to 3 million. Smallpox was the big killer, but other diseases that we think of as fairly innocuous such as mumps, also cut huge swaths through the population.

The whites didn't know about infection control. Its not Army policy to scalp, much less teach anyone else.
