IMMIGRATION
Border arrests of immigrants falling to 1970s figures

Poor U.S. economy and tougher enforcement detering illegal crossings from Mexico.

By Richard Marosi
LOS ANGELES TIMES
Sunday, March 08, 2009
SAN LUIS RIO COLORADO, Sonora — Arrests of illegal immigrants on the U.S.-Mexico border have fallen to levels unseen since the 1970s, as the ailing U.S. economy and enhanced enforcement appear to be deterring people from embarking on treks north.
The trend is apparent from San Diego to Brownsville but is felt most dramatically on the border's busiest illegal immigrant corridors, which extend through the Mexican state of Sonora into Arizona and California.
In the sleepy border town of San Luis Rio Colorado, the immigrants who once streamed through have all but disappeared. Piles of donated clothing spill from a closet at the town's immigrant shelter, and shoeshine boys outnumber slumbering immigrants at Benito Juarez plaza.

tougher enforcement ? or is it due to the poor economy?
all of the sudden the enforcement and laws are working?
if youre a believer of that ? then god help you with the headaches when the economy picks up again...

It is the poor economy. And of course tougher border enforcement as well.

But to take the blame off of Mexico is just so shortsighted and ridiculous. Ask yourself why are Mexicans leaving Mexico? Is it because the Mexican societal system keeps the underclass in its place...permanently? Why are Mexican adults that are illegally entering the US uneducated? Is it because Mexico doesn't care/want/feel the need to educate all of its citizens? Why does Mexico encourage its citizens to leave? Don't they need their youngest/strongest people? Or do they only want the rich/educated/connected people? Honestly what Mexico has been doing is tantamount to genocide -- literally exporting its poor and uneducated to keep its own hierarchy clean.

Mexico needs to clean house, and you do Mexico no favors by whitewashing its crimes against its own people.

if we were brazil...and brazil was mexico you would see the same problem...thats why..the real solution

is to cooperate and try to help mexico to industrialised as soon as possible...because what your seeing ....is your a small effect of what the world is seeing...

I don't buy it!? A recession shouldn't deter someone from crossing the border; remember the conditions where they come from are always worse, besides I think having Obama in office might be cause enough for many illegals to take the trek. I think the media is trying to downplay the situation, to prevent the ongoing firestorm over this issue.

Illegal immigration is Mexico's fault. If Mexico were not a corrupt Third World country, illegals would not be sneaking across the US border.

You see, we have another neighbor. There is a whole country of people that live to the north of us, you know. They are called the Canadians. They do not dump millions and millions of their impoverished, poorly educated citizens on us and expect the US to provide for them. They do not send massive quantities of drugs into the US. To the best of my knowledge, there are no Canadian gangs that have set up shop in the US, Canadian women do not cross the border in the late stages of pregnancy to deliver an anchor baby, therefore making it more difficult to return them to their home country. As a matter of fact, the Canadians are excellent neighbors. We get along quite well and seldom have serious disagreements.

Now stop and ask yourself this- why is it that Mexico cannot behave like Canada?

deter? you better buy it...a lot of mexicans are owneres of their own plots....and trust me there not going to die of hunger the only reason they came was for work...not because they were starving....
its mexico not africa...
and the elites projected this when nafta when to effect...and mexico stop subsidising and protecting there
agriculture sector to the heavy advance agricultured sector of america...and flooded and destroy mexico domestic market...
and what happen...
have a lot of farmers....running for the border to find jobs quickly
we put in effect the trues form of capitalism...
destroy
inefficient sectors in our economy..and let seventy million of mexicans reapt the
cheap products of america...at the expense of the 30 million inefficient farmers...

I have to wonder why your excuse Mexico of any and all responsibility for this mess. Does it interfere with a 'la raza' type mentality? To take ownership of the craphole politics of your own country makes it harder to point fingers at the US? To accept and admit Mexicos corruption and guilt is to remove yourself from a victim mentality?

Change can not occur from without, and Mexico and its people will never 'rise' or be in any way powerful if they cannot or willnot admit to their shortcomings. And be willing to change them.
