Would these “non-citizens” also be here illegally?

Quote:
AUGUSTA — Lawmakers are preparing to consider a bill that would let communities choose to allow non-U.S. citizens to vote in municipal elections.

Proponents argue that letting non-citizen immigrants vote on local issues would include them in the community and provide incentive for them to pursue citizenship.

The bill, LD 1195, is being sponsored by Sen. Justin Alfond, D-Portland, and co-sponsored by Rep. Brian Bolduc, D-Auburn. It was referred this week to the Legal and Veterans Affairs Committee.

Why would immigrants need 'incentive' to become citizens? Isn't that the reason they left the country of their birth to move to the US? Because if we have 'immigrants' who are OK with living here but not having allegiance to the US then they need to go. Or at least be honest and not call themselves 'immigrants', and instead call themselves - oh, I don't know....ex-pats? After all, if they don't wish to become citizens then they should only be allowed to live and work in the US for a short time.
I find this whole idea of trying to entice 'immigrants' into picking a side as it were, to be very disturbing. It also puts a whole new light on the reasons certain 'immigrants' refuse to learn English, doesn't it?

Or perhaps it would allow non-citizens to dictate terms to actual citizens. Whats wrong with that picture???

How about some incentive for them to improve their homelands?

I believe that allowing any non-citizen to vote in any election, even if it was just for a dogcatcher, is enough reason for an all out revolution. It should not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Like many other posters here, I'm disgusted by the fact that this idea is even being considered. No non-citizen residing in the USA should ever be given the ability to take part in sellecting the leaders that represent us, the REAL citizens of the USA. As APJ mentioned earlier, if this was ever allowed to happen, than I could no longer feel that the US government represents its citizens...Bring forth the revolution!!!

I am disgusted about this like all of the other posters. Of course an illegal alien should never be allowed to vote-but neither should a legal immigrant. While legal immigrants do follow the rules and come here the right way, they do not deserve all of the rights that American citizens do. They should not be allowed to vote.
