WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill is calling upon the nominee to head the Department of Homeland Security’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) program to focus on cracking down on employers who hire illegal immigrants as an important part of an overall strategy to deter illegal immigration.
As a former prosecutor, McCaskill has long believed that employer enforcement is a straight-forward and cost-effective way to reduce the incentives for illegal immigrants to enter the United States. Today, in a hearing of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, McCaskill urged John Morton, tapped to head ICE, to prioritize investigating and punishing employers who refuse to play by the rules by continuing to hire undocumented workers.
While I think cracking down on employers is great, my concern is we will see more of what happened in Washington state, where they are "cracking down" on the employer, but our government gave illegal aliens work permits instead of deporting them. I fear that this may become more common.
Also, if our politicians were that concerned with "cracking down" on employers, E-verify should have not only been extended permanently but it should have been part of the so-called stimulus bill, to ensure that any jobs that are actually created go to Americans and not to illegal aliens.
