WASHINGTON — The Obama administration is expanding a program initiated by President George W. Bush aimed at checking the immigration status of virtually every person booked into local jails. In four years, the measure could result in a tenfold increase in deportation proceedings against illegal immigrants who have been convicted of crimes, according to current and former U.S. officials.

By matching inmates' fingerprints to federal immigration databases, authorities hope to pinpoint deportable immigrants before they are released from custody. Inmates in federal and state prisons already are screened. But authorities generally lack the time and staff to do the same at the nation's local jails, which house up to twice as many illegal immigrants and where inmates come and go more quickly.

Let's hope that this program is expanded nationwide and becomes a federal requirement.

Why does Obama continually flip-flop on the illegal alien issue?

Probably because he is between a rock (Black Americans) and a hard place (Latinos as a group).

Cynical; ain't I?

I wonder if he's not actually flip-flopping, he might be toughening enforcement to address issues that people opposing legalization of illegal aliens have, gaining their support for when he wants to pass an immigration reform.

Idk but I bet the La Raza/Casa Maryland crowd is probably getting annoyed with his lack of talk about immigration and very little mentioning of a pathway to citizenship.

I wouldn't be surprised if CASA of Maryland did so considering that they've been assisting day laborers on how to remain in the US without being arrested.

Obama flip flops on almost everything. No reason to think the illegal alien issue is any different.

Obama is smart. Many of the programs he is putting in place might appear to be flip-flopping but he is setting up a structure to be able to rid America of the problem of illegal aliens without upsetting people into rioting.

That whole "let's give illegal aliens driver's licenses" thing? What a genius way to get a picture, address, and description for the illegals that are already here!

Jail checks for immigration status? Genius!

And honestly, half of Black America still deals with discrimination and poverty and I think we need to fix that social system before we allow illegals to cut in line.
