WASHINGTON (AP) — Defying President Barack Obama (http://www.newsday.com/topic/politics/government/barack-obama-PEPLT007408.topic - broken link), lawmakers on Thursday saved a program that helps states with the cost of incarcerating criminal illegal immigrants as the House began the annual process of crafting the legislation to fund the government.

The State Criminal Alien Assistance Program, a favorite of lawmakers from California (http://www.newsday.com/topic/us/california-PLGEO100100100000000.topic - broken link) and Texas (http://www.newsday.com/topic/us/texas-PLGEO100104600000000.topic - broken link), still wasn't completely spared from budget cuts. A House Appropriations panel decided to allocate $300 million to the program, a $100 million reduction from current levels but still a clear rejection of Obama's plans to eliminate the program.

In proposing $17 billion in budget cuts last month, the president called for killing the program.
House panel rejects Obama plan to eliminate subsidies for jailing criminal aliens -- Newsday.com (http://www.newsday.com/topic/sns-ap-us-congress-spending,0,7981884.story - broken link)

Some funding is better than nothing.

Good point. Perhaps Mr. Obama was hoping to have them all amnestied once released and able to roam freely in society. Wouldn't that be fantastic?

I say, let's put a moat around Washington DC, release the amnestied criminal illegals and let them roam freely among the politicians. Now that would be fantastic.

Not a lot of it. Washington needs a complete enema. If one or two good people have to be let go for us to straighten out the Congress then so be it. This country is doomed if we don't do something quickly......
