Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Friday disputed claims that illegal immigrants caused California's $24.3 billion deficit, while he praised their economic contributions and said he is "happy" they have access to services.
In response to dozens of questions from readers who say the state ought to wipe out the deficit by eliminating services for illegal immigrants, the governor said it is a "myth" that those immigrants are to blame.
He said the cost of services to illegal immigrants, which has been estimated at $4 billion to $5 billion annually, is a "small percentage" of the deficit California faces.
"Yes, it is something that ought to be dealt with, but the fact of the matter is, I think it's an easy scapegoat for people to point the finger and say, 'Our budget is out of whack because of illegal immigrants.'

"He said the cost of services to illegal immigrants, which has been estimated at $4 billion to $5 billion annually, is a "small percentage" of the deficit California faces."If the deficit is $24.3 billion, just what percentage does 4-5 billion represent ?Is it really that small?
That is 4-5 Billion directly to Illegals, what do you think the number is when you count the anchors? I bet it's double that.
So much for people saying Illegals can't get social services. We could eliminate half our debt by tossing the Illegals out and having the anchors follow.
1angry.....
I suspect that the costs are much higher as well. If nobody performs an immigration status check (hospitals, schools, law enfordement, etc ) Where do these figures come from ? After all,it does say "estimated" .
I am always leery of government " estimates" as the have always been on the (extremely) low side.
Heh....tell me about it. I am so glad I live in Texas, I don't see how Californians can stand the situation there.
Isn't Texas as overrun with illegals as Cali? Thanks to the illegal alien sanctuary aka Chicago, I know Cook County, and a few other areas of Illinois is.
