I agree with you completely. All my friends that are black (except for one) think the same thing. It doesnt suprise me at all. However, I'm not convinced of what others say; that it hurts the case. I also think he was politically and socially pressured into it. Who knows. What I do know is that even if he is "exploiting another race issue", he is obviously still making the news.
