ARTICLE: Airport hits cabbies for refusing fares

By GREGG AAMOT, Associated Press WriterMon Apr 16, 6:51 PM ET

Taxi drivers who refuse service to travelers carrying alcohol at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport face tougher penalties despite protests from Muslim cabbies who sought a compromise for religious reasons, officials said Monday.

The Metropolitan Airports Commission said new penalties were needed to ensure customers get safe and reliable taxi service, and voted to suspend a driver's airport taxi license for 30 days for the first offense and revoke it for two years for a second offense. The new penalties take effect May 11.

Airport officials say more than 70 percent of the cabbies at the airport are Muslim, and many of them say Islamic law forbids them from giving rides to people carrying alcohol.

Airport officials said that since January 2002, there have been more than 4,800 instances of drivers' refusing to take alcohol-carrying travelers.

Commissioners said the old rules didn't prevent customers from being stranded at the curb or as reported in a few cases dropped off before their destination after drivers learned of their alcohol on board.

Some Somalis who testified Monday urged commissioners to reject the new penalties and find some other solution.

"We see this as a penalty against a group of Americans only for practicing their faith," said Hassan Mohamud, an imam and an adjunct professor at William Mitchell College of Law.

The airport had proposed one pilot program that had drivers who wouldn't transport alcohol display a different top light on their cab, but the public's reaction was overwhelmingly negative and taxi drivers feared it would make travelers avoid taxis altogether.

WHAT DO YOU GUYS AND GIRLS THINK OF THIS??! ARE YOU JUST AS OUTRAGED THAT THESE SOMALIS WANT TO IMPOSE THEIR LAW ON EVERYONE ELSE?? HOW ABOUT THE MUSLIM WOMEN WORKING AT GROCERY STORES WHO REFUSE TO BE CASHIERS AS THEY DO NOT WNAT TO TOUCH PIG MEAT??

Thank God MN is actually doing something about this...I cannot believe they just don't fire every single cabbie on the first offense, though (ex-MN here). I suppose they couldn't afford that...Cabbies: you LIVE IN THE USA! ALCOHOL IS LEGAL to drink/transport, etc....what is so friggin' hard to understand? You wanna practice every aspect of your religion? That's legal here, too, as long as you're not hurting anyone...but do it at home.

I don't understand why they expect to carry on their customs and not try to blend in to the american culture. The same goes when you see an arabic woman wearing hajibs, burkas (sp?) just like in the old country. Why don't they try to blend in with everyone else in their new surroundings and not draw so much attention? It's arrogant to come to someone else's country and try to change its ways.

Hire new cab drivers. It's that simple. There's no need to get riled up over this. I think the airport is doing just fine. It's not about religion, it's about performing the task for which you've been hired.

You are totally right on this...but it is the cabbies that are making it about religion because they know that, if they create a "religious freedom" issue of it, it will be harder for the airport to fire them; employer has to jump through legal hoops/sue scares.

Funny thing is the MAC (Metropolitan Airports Commission) doesn't hire the drivers. They have to pass a license test to work at the Airport and pay a yearly fee to operate there. These cabbies can work anyplace they want. They choose the Airport because their fares are travelers, either coming or going to or from the Airport. By and large, they are much safer as they rarely have to go "inner city" and the fares mostly are respectable folks that won't rob or worse the cabbies. There is a lot of "testing" going on in the good old USA, my opinion is there are other cultures testing to see what Americans will tolerate...

If political correctness in the name of "religious tolerance" is allowed to flourish, it won't be long before we find ourselves in the same sort of quagmire that much of Europe is facing.

It needs to end now.

Shat blows me away is that the new wave of Immigrants (legal and illegal) to the USA, do NOT wwant to blend in as Immigrants have for the last 300+ years.

These people come here and build "countries withing the USA". I worked with several Brazilian, Spanish, and Haitian immigrants. They always demand to speak to someone in their native language, all live in the same communities, and shop at their own stores. It's like these guys are physically in the USA, but still live as if they were in their countries.

The problem is that the USA is catering to these people. I fear that the USA will become as crazy as Europe when catering to the immigrant's every demand.

That is scary. That is why I am opposed to amnesty and open borders. This insanity must end.
