I still don't see what the big deal is. A couple or a family conversing in any language is no harm no foul. Their business.
My wife who is Thai actually gets mad at me if I speak Thai to her in public. She feels that it is rude. LOL She worries people will think we are talking about them. LOL Normally I am.

Get the U.S. Army in there to take care of the illegals. That would solve it.

Any how why the arrogance? English is spoken by 80% of the USA population.

What are you worried about?
Bottom line: unless dealing with health/public safety concerns; English should be mandatory for all government business pertaining to issues here in the USA-----------read that no more ESL in public schools (sink or swim), voting materials, etc.

Bilingual education was normal in California prior to the 1998 Proposition 227. After the passage of Prop 227 students who lacked proficient English are given a fact track 1 year English emersion program. After completion of this one year English course the student is returned to the general class program. Some say that this was detrimental to the students and is a precursor to why so many Hispanics drop out of High School. They cannot understand the English Language thus ESL classes are necessary. However some pundits will disagree.

In the event that ZERO illegals were in the Los Angeles area, there would still be an enormous Hispanic-American presence who by choice will speak Spanish and quite possibly prefer public discourse in Spanish. In case you don't know over 35 million Americans speak Spanish.

It seems like you have a problem with the Spanish language more then the Spanish language has a problem with you!

English is only the de facto language of the USA and nothing more!

Remember that!
How do you figure that if there were ZERO illegals in L.A. or anywhere else in this country that we should accomodate ANYONE in this country in their native tongue? What arrogance and sense of entitlement! Our national language is English even if it is de facto. If one prefers not to speak our language then tough, don't expect us to coddle you just because it is "your native tongue is your preference".

There have been numerous attempts to make English our official langauge but special interests group (like Hispanics) have b*tched to high heavens and our PC congress critters have listened to them. Senator Reid even tried to claim that it would be racist for us to make English our official language. This is what we are up against. Of course it's not considered racist for other countries to have an official language. Oh no, just the USA. Just like you calling us nativists for wanting our national language to take it's rightful place in our national heritage and culture as official. I see nothing "arrogant" about that.

You make my case for me, thanks. If 80% of Americans speak English then why shouldn't it become our official language? What am I worried about? Well it has been in the last couple of decades where an English speaking American has been started to be required to speak Spanish to get a job in their own country. With the Spanish speaking population growing by leaps and bounds in particular due to illegal immigration, there is nothing to worry about our national language being replaced by Spanish? It was even admitted in here that many Hispanic citizens prefer Spanish to English as their primary language.

We would save tons of money not having to print government documents in several different languages also. Now my question to you is "what are YOU afraid of by making English our official language"?

CORRECTION!!! California Highway Patrol( as allowed by the California Department Of Motor Vehicles has a "LAW" that if a driver of a commercial vehicle can not communicate with a CHP Officer or a Port of Entry Officer In "ENGLISH" he can and I know for a fact they will fine him / her $500.00 on the spot. As was stated in the Riverside Press Enterprise, Riverside , CA.

This is the dumbest idea I've read. You aren't a language teacher, you really have no experience in ESL. My dad taught ESL and French for about 30-40 years now. He even said that immersion only is not a good idea. Most language teachers agree.

Students in Arizona's Structured English Immersion classes learn at a faster pace than students who take bilingual education classes.
