I'd rather take advice from a person who actually knows what they are talking about...my dad has more experience in this field than you do.

My dad had to learn English and fast when he immigrated here in 1951 (legally of course)----------there ain't no ESL classes for Hungarians. Either they sink or swim.

Public schools in the 19th century aren't the same as we know them now, especially in small towns, and ethnic communities, where teachers were hired by the community, with parents paying them. They often lived with different families throughout the year as part of their pay. So of course if a teacher was hired by a German community, they hired a German speaking teacher, but they also insisted on their children learning English.

Things are much different today, where students from many different ethnicities, and speaking many different languages, attend the same public school together. The one unifying thing we have in this melting pot of a country is language. It would benefit immigrants to learn English as soon as possible, because without a common language we're a mishmash of separate enclaves, with those unable to apeak English relegated to the fringes of society.

The best way to learn is through emersion, the same way we all learned to speak our native language.

No, we are no longer a nation of immigrants. Our citizen population way outnumbers our immigrant population today. We are now a nation of mostly Americans by several generations. Most of us were born so we aren't immigrants.
People with your views typically are xenophobic. In fact, you have expressed very xenophobic attitudes in the past.

No ESL classes for Hungarians? You may be right, but I know at least three people from Czech Republic that teach ESL...There must be some Hungarian tutors.

Which is very unfortunate: it needs to be tough to become an American--------such would weed out those folks with a strong tribal mentality.

No it's not because of that. You're just a xenophobe for all the other ridiculous things (no ESL, claiming people's culture are inherently inferior) the standard things you post...
