An interesting controversy, one which has come up before on the forum. It's a 'wobbler' for me, for while I'm certainly sympathetic to anyone suffering thirst, ultimately, these folks are putting themselves in danger when they elect to illegally enter the US....they get plenty of warnings beforehand. If they're truly unable to resist temptation, then of course a FENCE comes to mind, which would stop them...but we all know where THAT argument will go.

For those who have convinced themselves that this is TRULY their 'Christian duty', then by all means, do it; just realize that in so doing, you're aiding and abetting illegal activity, and take your fines and punishment. It would be little different if one were to offer ladders to 'hungry people' to aid them in entering the homes of rich people, to steal property.....or in offering hungry and homeless people 'pass keys' in order to enter a large warehouse to get at the items inside....or offering grappling hooks to those who wish to hop illegally onto moving freight trains, so they can 'travel in search of work'. If you feel this is your 'duty' to these people, then by all means do it...but prepare to be charged with aiding in a crime by the 'secular authorities'.

Illegal imigration is a crime. Aiding someone who's committing it is ALSO a crime. That's the bottom line.

I realize this is an emotional issue, but ultimately, that doesn't make it 'OK'. Want to avoid thirst? Then avoid desert crossings during summer. Want to aid people in trouble? Then a good suggestion would be to keep them from getting INTO trouble before it happens.

Not what a lot of people are going to want to hear, I realize. Even the Catholic Church has recently (and reluctantly) admitted that illegal immigration is at least a 'wrong', on the part of those who do it...(of course, they say that the illegals are 'driven' to it, by GREATER wrongs).

Truly a complex issue.

Try criminals.

We as a nation have the right to secure our borders----------never mind Mexico's whining hypocrisy since their Patrulla Frontera ain't nice to Guatemalans who cross illegally into Mexico.

I hold the Mexican government and a culture that promotes high birth rates regardless of ability to provide a means of support for the shame of illegals suffering and dying in the desert. I am sick of Mexico's oh feel sorry for me mentality.

You should see the trash in the back Country, it's littered with water bottles, clothes and food wrappers with Spanish print. It's absolutely disgusting along trails like the Pacific Coast trail.

Funny how its never a option to make economic improvements at home its always how can we make it easier for immigrants to immigrate to America.
Making economic improvements to one's country is a foreigin concept to Mexicans. Mexican culture does not make room for economic improvements. Mexican culture only makes room for government corruption and drug dealing.

Most viva la raza Mexicans hate Anglos more than they hate Mexican drug cartels and corrupt Mexican politicians.

I think it is more fear than hatred of us...............the inferiority complex exhibited by many Mestizo Hispanics stems from their (especially female Indian) ancestors being mistreated by the conquistadors. Read that they are afraid to raise a hand against the White Spaniard but it is 'OK' in their minds to hate/fear Anglos------never mind that the latter two tend to look alike in the ethnic sense.

In the eyes of the viva la raza crowd, corrupt Mexican politicians and Mexican drug cartels can do no wrong. Everything bad that happens in Mexico they somehow find a way to blame it on Whitey.

Actually, I'd rather they stay and protest their Govt vs coming here and sucking social services dry. You know, the ones meant for Americans, not people who are good at hiding in the forest from the BP but great at having sex and finding US ERs to have anchor kids. From there they seem to be able to find our schools, WIC office, etc with no problem. Modern day Magellans.
