The Obama administration intends to announce an ambitious plan today to overhaul the nation's much-criticized immigration detention system, trying to transform it from a patchwork of jail and prison cells to what its new chief called a "truly civil detention system."

Details are sketchy, and even the first steps will take months or years to complete. They include reviewing the federal government's contracts with more than 350 local jails and private prisons, with an eye toward consolidating many detainees in places more suitable for noncriminals facing deportation — some possibly in centers built and run by the government.

It appears to me that to be detained they have broken some law? It also appears that Illegal Immigrants have a separate set of laws.

they mean violent offenders.

its pretty normal to categorize inmates based on threat level.

it makes no sense to jail someone, whose only "crime" is being in the country illegally, with a rapist or murderer.

i knew this was coming tho. there was an article just recently detailing how much the dentention centers fail these [illegal] prisoners medically. lots of problems with the detention centers.

Yes, and in this case, a separate place for all those waiting to get shipped out. One big bus station!

So they are finally going to have a place like they do in Williamson County Texas, just for illegal aliens waiting to be deported.

That is what I understand it to be, "consolidating many detainees in places more suitable for noncriminals facing deportation" more detention centers. Get them out of jails and the prisons, and have a bus station, getting them ready for deportation.

The biggest problem with the detention centers is that they are not located across the street from an airport or the Greyhound bus station. A very simple way for the illegals to avoid feeling that they have been failed medically by ICE is to stay the he11 out of the US in the first place.

I still believe non-violent illegals should be given the option of voluntary departure so they can get home and back to work and their families as soon as possible.

Doesn't every single one that is not currently in prison, jail, or ICE custody have the option to voluntarily depart?

My solution is a lot more permanent than anything the libs would come up with. It would ensure that these people would never try to come in again illegally, they wouldn't be capable anymore.
I would put land mines along the border, so that ANYONE not crossing at an approved crossing station is at risk of being blown up.

I dont care where they 'detain" them as long as they get their fingerprints and deport them right away. If they come back THEN its jail time. Hard core, bread and water and maybe a beating for good measure so they will remember it lol
