Ya, me too as an observer. There were lot's more Mexican flags as American flags and it was just about all everyone was talking about. Shortly afterwards article after article spelled out not to display Mexican flags the "next" time. I'd say it's a learned behavior.

You weren't at the one here obviously. It was all Mexican flags, Che Guevara posters and t-shirts. Kids were skipping out of class (right after the free breakfast) and running down the street shouting "Mejico!! Mejico!!" over and over and it was all Mexican flags. One American veteran came out of his house with a USA flag and was attacked, jabbed with the end of a Mexican flag. They tried to tip over a couple school buses that were sent to carry them back to their schools - poor things were tired from walking 2-3 miles you know. That was the International May Day celebration protest.

Later that same month, they repeated the march, UFW types from California were bussed in, they were carrying American flags and the Mexicans showing up again to protest were told to carry American flags, many they left laying in the street and you could tell their heart was no longer in it. The second was was odd, old Chicano farm worker types next to confused looking Aztlaner types.

Even Piolin wasn't involved in the later marches. I'm not sure if it's because the first one was so antagonistic and he saw that as counterproductive or because he because he preferred the way the first one was conducted.
