Great. And, this apparently causes no great animosity among the American population.

At one time, not so many years ago, there were only a million or so illegal Hispanics here. They were great people to work with (I knew many), they were happy to be here, (and often said so); and, believe it or not, they actually DID DO The Jobs Americans Didn't Want To Do"...and it was VERY rare to hear an American complain about them..the whole situation was looked at as a 'fact of life', not worthy of much attention. They were cheerful, hard-working, and hard not to like. Those who didn't like them at least respected their 'pluck'.

It's my sincere guess that if today, there were 70,000 illegal Hispanics here....or 700,000...or even two million...and that if they behaved as though they were happy to be here...MOST AMERICANS would have no serious objections to their presence.

But we all know that that's not the case. And because of that, many Americans are now becoming alarmed. Is anyone surprised?

Are you being sarcastic towards me, or to somebody else? If in fact you do believe that third worlers are running amok, then I stand by the comment...if not then I'm sorry for the hostility.

As for Andrea, considering that at MANY universities have a LARGE percentage of people contain "third world" heritage, this would negate the comment disparaging "Third worlders".

That's why we had operation W E T B A C K? Since we were okay with small numbers of illegal immigrants?

I think that this is really an idealized narrative that you set for yourself. Many people, not all, are very ethnocentric. Differences scare them, regardless of the extent. This vocalized minority has dictated much of the conversation concerning illegal immigrants.

Yes, arrogance gone amok indeed...
That is why I made the distinction "en masse", because the majority of third worlders are uneducated and could not make it here. Those who are able to come here for education and opportunity have the money to afford it, hence from the wealthier class. I work with these wonderful people. My place of employ is like the United Nations, and is very enjoyable to work with and know people from Somalia, Bangladesh, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Taiwan, mainland China, Bulgaria, Canada, Cuba, Brazil and Mexico. But they are the creme de la creme of their countries, and they know it. And they are here working hard and going to school legally.

Okay, we can agree that the UC system is one of the premiere university systems in the world, right? Let's look a demographic breakdown of the UC system. According to UCUES (the UC Undergraduate Experience Survery) 40% of respondents were born in the US with one or both foreign parents. 21% of respondents were foreign born. 11% had foreign grandparents. Only 27% of respondents were born in the US as well as their parents and grandparents (thus, "older" immigrants...natives). Most were either Asian or Latin American. The majority of Asia is the third world. There are no first world Latin American countries. This would be a HIGH percentage for ALL of them to be "creme de la creme". In fact, if we look at the data concerning economic backgroud, roughly 1 out of 3 came from self described lower or working class backgrounds. This is consistent with the percentage that is eligible for Pell Grants in the UC system.

There are a total of over 200,000 students at the UC system. It is one of the largest university systems in the world. It is economically one of the saving graces of CA.

If a plurarity of students contained parents from the third world, it would seem that this fear of "en-masse" immigration from the third world is just that. A fear.

So unless there is something I'm missing...I don't think that "third worlders" and their children can't make it here.

Demographers have noted that Asian and Hispanic purchasing power are growing at a very fast rate. The two will soon comprise $1.7 TRILLION by 2015...I think that "third worlders", and their children, will be fine...

An interesting statistic (maybe you know it) would be to know how many of these now educated people go back to help make their country of origin a better place. Many are not US citizens, but just temporarily enjoying the work experience and educational benefits.

The largest percentage of people again had least 1 parent that was foreign born, yet they were born in the US. So, again the majority stay within the US.

However, there is an interesting trend happening in California in which an increasing number of Indians are returning back to India. This is still a minority.

By simply "hispanics" are you lumping legal and illegal hispanics together like most pro illegal sympathisers/apologisers do? Actually only hispandering Democratic politicians care if illegal hispanics are alienated, mainly seeing illegals as future Democratic voters if they can get them amnestied. Legal hispanics, on the other hand, better wise up and realize that the pubic is against illegal immigration and that sentiment has been turning for some time against any legal hispanics who abet illegal hispanics.
