You would think that “immigration reform” would have something to do with immigration, but it really doesn’t.

Immigration is the orderly process of entering a foreign country by applying for a visa, meeting certain requirements of residency, waiting in line, and then being invited to cross the border.

Of course, it has not always been that way. I suppose in the 13th century when the Mongols invaded Europe, they might have thought of their sweeping presence as a kind of “immigration” — and who in Austria would have had the temerity to stamp “visa denied” on the broad swords of the khans?

Come to think of it, perhaps immigration these days really isn’t all that different from the 13th century — at least that is what you would believe if you listen to President Bush and many leading Democrats talk about “immigration reform.”

Although the invasion of the United States by Mexico has been much less violent than the invasion of Europe by the Mongol hordes, it should not be considered any less significant. There are at least 12 million people who have swept across our southern border in the past 20 years, and now they are asking the government of the United States to surrender to them.

“Our numbers are too great for you,” they say. “Resistance is futile.”

And if you only listened to our nation’s leaders you would have to conclude that the illegal immigrants are right — apparently there really is nothing to do but surrender.

It appears we find the task of building a wall across the southern border, or otherwise policing it, to be an insurmountable obstacle. What the Chinese people were able to accomplish more than two thousand years ago when facing their own Mongol invasion, we today can’t do. “It’s just too hard,” we are told. “The border with Mexico is 2,000 miles long and can’t possibly be closed.” Funny that the Chinese were able to build a wall 4,000 miles long without any of the benefits of modern technology. I guess they were just smarter than us.

Another thing we apparently can’t do is police our homeland. We are told that there are just too many illegal aliens already here, and there is nothing we can do about it. Police departments across the country don’t even consider being an illegal immigrant to be a crime. It’s just a tip o’ the hat and “Have a nice day, ma’am,” as they send them back into anonymous obscurity.

Yes -- good article. And for right now we're better off not doing anything because all the politicans (working for the greedy cheap-labor corporations) talk of is handing them amnesty and citizenship.

That will destroy social security because all the new citizens will be taking a nice retirement check even if they never paid in.

The best thing for now is leave them illegal until we can get a better set of politicians into office, after replace those that have sold out to the corporate interests.

The USA has been ruined, and it would take a very special person to fix it, Im not sure we will survive as a country, if we continue on this road to self destruction. The fact we have illegals here to begin with, but in the millions that we do, speaks volumes, I personally think the USA allowed this to happen on purpose, it is a change in demographics. Those of us that are native to the country are being pushed out or have already, the way of life we knew is becoming obsolete. I personally feel like I live in a foreign country where I live, and don't know where to move to get out of it.

Good article. I'm one of those that think illegal aliens are not immigrants. Illegal aliens are criminals. Immigrants come here legally wanting to become part of the United States of America. Illegal aliens pick and choose which laws the will obey from the very first step they take in this country. So comparing the invasion of Mongol hordes to our illegal aliens is a very fit comparison. It's interesting that the author, Frank Miele is from Northwest Montana. Just about the last place in the country I'd expect an article like this to come from.

All else being equal, you have to accumulate forty (40) calendar quarters during which you worked in SS-covered employment (and therefore paid into the system) before you can qualify for any SS retirement pension at all. For those who can't do the math, forty quarters is the equivalent of ten years.

The SS agreement Bush wants with Mexico would allow Mexicans to collect SS from the US while actually working for very little time here. It would also pay out SS disability payments to Mexicans who have fraudulently worked here as little as three years. The totalization agreement would allow Mexicans to collect US SS when they worked for example, 7 years in Mexico and 3 in the US. Even though you need 24 years work in Mexico to qualify for their SS. But no one knows for sure just how the totalization agreement with Mexico will work. The commissioners of both the Mexican and American SS signed the agreememt back in 2004 but it has been held top secret since then, and no one has been allowed to view it, and the Bush Administration has refused to release it to the public.

Maybe bush should get himself a job in Mexico when the most wonderful day in our history comes along, the day he is gone.
