Oh come on. The FCC inquiry is looking into HATE SPEECH. Not anti-illegal alien dialog. I doubt that big, bad Uncle Sam is going to repeal the 1st amendment any time soon. Especially over this issue.
Really? According to La Raza, et al. simply referring to illegal aliens as illegal aliens is hate speech that needs to be stopped. They are also attempting to connect violence against Hispanics to anti-“immigrant” hate speech.
National Association of Hispanic Journalists calls on our nation’s news media to stop using the dehumanizing term “illegals” as a noun to refer to undocumented immigrants.
In addition, NAHJ has always denounced the use of the degrading terms “alien” and “illegal alien” to describe undocumented immigrants because it casts them as adverse, strange beings, inhuman outsiders who come to the U.S. with questionable motivations. “Aliens” is a bureaucratic term that should be avoided unless used in a quote.
NAHJ prefers using the term "undocumented immigrant" or "undocumented worker" rather than the term "illegal immigrant" which several media outlets have adopted.
At the end of the day, hate speech is not free speech, but it seems many Americans have trouble distinguishing the two. Or perhaps, with more Americans joining hate groups and anti-immigrant rhetoric—to say nothing of anti-immigrant action—becoming more mainstream, the question should not be whether Americans can recognize hate speech but whether and to what extent they are bothered by it. (The fact that several news outlets have mentioned the victims’ immigration status—as if that is relevant to the case!—further illustrates this country’s obsession with immigration.
Throughout U.S. history, American Indians, blacks, Irish immigrants and other groups have suffered from injustice stemming from hate. The immigration debate has made the Hispanic community hate’s latest target, and too often, the news media serve as the anti-immigrant bullhorn.
The Internet, television and the political stage have become platforms for hate. Turning the term “illegal” into a noun, nativists, extremists and politicians have broadcast their messages across the country. They demonize the undocumented and, in turn, all Latinos. They depict us as disease-ridden invaders and criminals.The media have been instrumental in moving this language from the fringes of society right into our living rooms and everyday lives.
Television-talk-show hosts like CNN’s Lou Dobbs have echoed the anti-immigrant hate speech, calling undocumented immigrants “criminals” and an “army of invaders.”
The news media are not the only ones willing to work with anti-immigrant extremists; some politicians do, too.
The hope for a better future for all U.S. residents is the driving force behind National Council of La Raza efforts to unite with others to silence hate speech and stop hate crimes.
Anti-immigrant groups are using every medium to spread their message of hate.
But as we become a more sophisticated society, we are learning that violence doesn't have to start with an action -- it starts with just words. For that reason, this year's third annual So We Might See Coalition's Media Violence Fast campaign is partnering with the National Hispanic Media Coalition to take a stand against anti-immigrant hate speech.
During the week of October 19-26, the 2009 Media Violence Fast is focusing on:
...fight(ing) anti-immigrant hate speech. At the same time we are avoiding gratuitous violence in our entertainment media, we are going to challenge ourselves to listen to some of the worst anti-immigrant speech and support efforts to increase the public's access to information about hate speech, thus enabling them to take a stand against it.

Even if a law did get passed--(highly unlikely)--the first time the law was wielded, the accused would simply pull out their Vagueness Hammer and smash the law to pieces. But it will never come to that. No way, No how anything get codified.

Both sides are guilty of biased reporting. Funny, only conservative media is being targeted -- in particular, those reporting the truth about this invasion.

Being a member of the Anti-Defamation League, she should know better than to accuse anyone of using the term animal-like. No one has. The hypocrisy is almost laughable.
The 1st amendment has allowed the KKK and white supremacist, organizations from being silenced.
What are you trying to say here? The 1st amendment protects KKK/white supremacists' speech? What does allowing them from being silenced mean?
