LOS ANGELES - Outgoing Los Angeles Police Chief William Bratton said Tuesday that the LAPD must stay out of the business of collaring illegal immigrants if it wants to keep solving crimes.

Bratton, who ends his seven years as chief Saturday, urged his eventual successor to continue a three-decade-old policy known as Special Order 40. It prohibits officers from stopping people solely to determine whether they are in the country illegally.
Police chief: LAPD must keep out of migrant fight

Bratton: you are nothing more than a traitor who needs to be investigated.

"My officers can't prevent or solve crimes if victims or witnesses are unwilling to talk to us because of the fear of being deported," Bratton said in an opinion piece in the Los Angeles Times.
They have enacted similar policies in Montgomery County, MD. They have a “hands off the IA gangbangers” mandate. After all, we certainly wouldn’t want to make these miscreants feel uncomfortable. If so, they might actually leave -- and we definitely can’t have that.

thats not the way the policy works here in LA.

any gangbanger IS subject to scrutiny. LA leads in injunctions against gangs. they are rounded up and questioned.

Brattons point speaks more to WITNESSES. not thugs. the thugs [who end up being processed in the county jail] do get asked about citizenship. witnesses dont. i think its a good policy that helps foster community invovlement and cooperation --without the fear of future legal troubles.

That may be the intent of the LA policy, but it certainly isn’t in Montgomery County. Consequently, gangs are leaving Northern VA for greener pastures in MD.

When suspects are arrested for other crimes, "ICE will NOT be contacted, regardless of the individual's legal status and/or perceived gang affiliation," the memo said.

"Many gang members from Northern Virginia are moving or driving to Prince George's and other Maryland counties, into the District of Columbia or further south and west into Virginia to avoid dealing with police departments that are unrelenting in their efforts to keep gangs under control," authorities wrote in the Northern Virginia Regional Gang Task Force report.

Experts say jurisdictions such as Montgomery County, where police are told to look away from immigration violations, have become safe havens for gangs.

It's the wrong approach. Illegals need to be questioned of status regardless of where they are. It's complete bull that the BP and ICE are the only LE allowed to rid us of this problem. IMO social service offices should be allowed to have ICE on speed dial.

Yes, we are. However, I doubt if the LAPD will do much; especially with Tony ‘we clean your toilets’ as the Mayor. These vicious beasts are wreaking havoc across this country. Nothing is being done, because they are illegal aliens, and too many are afraid of being accused of racism. It simply isn’t PC to pursue them.

i dont beleive that. more and more police forces are signing up to have ICE agents at their county jails. LA county has agents at their jails. thats where criminals aprehended by LAPD and other forces get sent.

thats why LAPD does not really need to be border agents.
all the criminals who get caught and are subsequently sent to LA county jail wil be questioned on their citizenship.

people are really misinformed about what this policy really does and doesnt do. i also think more places will follow in LA countys steps [questioning citizenship of inmates]

Does this policy supersede the sanctuary city Special Order 40?

Quote:
Special Order 40 is a policy established in Los Angeles in 1979. Special Order 40 prohibits police officers from "initiat(ing) police action with the objective of discovering the alien status of a person." This prevents officers from inquiring about the immigration status of an individual and from contacting federal immigration officials about an individual's immigration status.

I would not blame the guy for doing the job he signed up to do, during his tenure, crime in LA has plummeted, you can rest assured that the residents of LA prefer the lapd to fight crime, instead of spending their
time stopping every "hispanic" on the street........
