In the first place, you make it sound as though the only people who come to the United States speak Spanish.

In the second place, it has always been the case that immigrants who genuinely wanted to assimilate into American society would learn English. All the immigrant groups who've come here in the previous two centuries did. Why is it suddenly necessary to bend over backwards to accommodate this one group of people?

And we don't even have to get started on the use of that term, "illegal immigrants." If you're not legal, then you're not supposed to be here in the first place. Make yourself legal, or understand that you're subject to deportation. The United States doesn't have to accommodate you; you have to accommodate the United States.

The pro illegals' fear is palpable hence their inane demands-----------intuitively they sense that the tide of public opinion is turning against any form of amnesty.

I think the OP knows that people of many language backgrounds come here but the others don't have the same reluctance to learn the common language of this country.

That's the whole reason Americans are being told they must learn Spanish -- the Spanish speaking immigrants refuse to learn English or have zero ability to learn and adapt. They aren't coming to assimilate, they're coming to live just like they lived back home, they'll make no effort to improve themselves but expect everyone will cater to them in Spanish. You often see these people get very indignant when someone won't speak to them in Spanish.

Meanwhile the Asians even in their own countries are learning English quickly so they can really compete.

What? I don't think Americans can be forced to learn any language--English or Spanish. Even if Spanish is selected as our secondary official language you would not be forced to learn it. But it might be a good idea.

The Dutch? Aren’t they the ones who paid something like 10X an avg annual salary per tulip bulb back in history? The Dutch may not be the best example of good judgment.

Absolutely! It’s an old strategy to keep the “slaves” ignorant. Sadly, they don’t realize the accommodations are intended to prevent them from assimilating. Thus, they will remain the underclass. After all, this is the USA, and the common language among assimilating immigrants is, and will continue to be, English.

Makes sense to me. While "all immigrant groups" have previously learned English, and assimilated, in our naivete we never made this an actual law....and now that oversight is coming back to 'bite' us. Now we're seeing groups which DON'T want to assimlate...and the assumptions we once had are no longer valid.

Yet no free society can continue long without a LOT of agreement and assimilation...such a society will either disintegrate, or lose its freedoms. That's common sense...and if we don't assimilate because we don't "have to", maybe we should assimilate because it's in our own interest to do so. If we choose NOT to assimilate, nor insist that others do so, then it should come as no great surprise when society comes apart....and someone steps in to FORCIBLY 'bring us together'..... whether we like it or not.

What 'all immigrant groups' once did, is not necessarily what NEW immigrant groups are doing today...and that's the whole problem.

A lady got a ticket here for not speaking English to a police officer - that had to be thrown out as it only applies to commerical drivers ..however, after she raised a stink and got a lawyer, the truth comes out -- she's been here 30 years -- and still doesn't know English???

In Calif a DMV hand book is available in ENGLISH or SPANISH.

Won't be long before all street signs will be in figurines instead of words...who needs to read ENGLISH?

Today there are many signs that show a figurine and a ENGLISH word(s)...I'm waiting for them to be in SPANISH also.

Lets see now "STOP/ALTO"...yep...that will work...question what to use for a figurine?
