Why would “legal” workers fear ICE and deportation?

Quote:
It's no secret that Vermont dairy farms hire immigrant workers. In fact it's believed the majority of all farm workers in the state are immigrant workers and some are working here illegally. But raid's like these are almost unheard of.

ICE says the audits are part of a larger nationwide work force enforcement strategy. Officials say 1,000 audits will be conducted nationwide-- and not just at farms.

The farms now have three working days to provide documentation for their workers. But some are worried many of the workers will leave before then fearing deportation. Farmers and workers who fail to comply will face consequences. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said, "Audits may result in civil penalties and lay the groundwork for criminal prosecution of employers who knowingly violate the law."

I would wager that the price of milk in Vermont is no cheaper than in PA or WI. Hmmm could it be that illegal labor does not result in a cost savings for the consumer?

Their prices may even be higher than the national average. Wouldn’t that be a hoot?

Note the crying and whining on the part of the farmers. That means to me that they know they are guilty. Why would they fear some of their workers leaving then before the investigation is even complete? Then they go on to cry about having a shortage of workers if some of these workers are here illegally and will be detained and deported. If they did it the right way by hiring legal immigrant or citizen workers in the first place then there would be no need to cry. I had to laugh the way they were trying to illicit sympathy for getting their hands caught in the cookie jar.

The response of a surprise visit like that should be, "Hey, no problem, let me get you all their paperwork. Can you let me finish cleaning this run real quick? Want to give me a hand?"

Instead the suspicion mounts, as evasive tactics are applied buy the farmer and excuses start.

Looks like the whiny unemployed Americans can stop complaining because there are going to be plenty of job openings at the Vermont dairy farm! Now get off your butts and get to work!

So what will happen to the employers?

- Nada, Because they can always say: "we didn't know their papers were falsified".
- Without any penalty, the farmers will just hire illegals again and again.
- I bet by the time the Audit rolls through in 4-5 years, new illegals will be in place working.
- Rinse/Repeat.

Viscous cycle, raids do not work, waste of money.

And you may just get your wish (since Americans would have a shot at said jobs).
