The recession has prompted some state and local governments to pare programs that benefit illegal immigrants. And although illegal immigrants may account for about seven million of the country’s 46 million uninsured, the health care bills being negotiated by Congress exclude them from expansions of subsidized public insurance.

Some of the Grady dialysis patients have chosen to return to their countries, encouraged by the hospital’s offer of free airfare, cash payments, three months of paid dialysis and assistance in seeking insurance or other long-term remedies. Others are trying their luck in states where Medicaid policies may be less restrictive.

But most remain in Atlanta, taking full advantage of a last-minute offer by the hospital, in response to a lawsuit, to pay for three months of dialysis at commercial clinics. They are hopeful that the reprieve will buy time for the lawsuit to progress or for private dialysis providers to take them as charity cases.

After hearing that the clinic would close, Ms. Perez, 32, set out for Alabama on Sept. 6 because cousins told her they might be able to procure dialysis there. Grady was not yet offering its deal for three months of treatment, and instead gave her $1,300, enough to cover dialysis for a week or two.

Ms. Perez said the money was quickly spent on rent, food and transportation. After going without dialysis for 16 days, she walked into an emergency room near Birmingham, which found that the potassium levels in her blood were high enough to require immediate filtration. Eight days later, she did the same at another Birmingham hospital.

How dare she use the money for anything other than its intended purpose! She wasn’t concerned, because she knew she could simply find another hospital to fleece. I wonder how many flat screen TVs have been purchased at the taxpayers’ expense. This despicable behavior is happening throughout this country, while needy citizens are left to die. If not for being overburdened by illegals, this dialysis clinic would still be open to serve the “citizens” of Atlanta. Yet, pro-illegals can’t quite fathom our anger.

our government is responsible for this mess. and corporations recruit illegals to come here.
DC refuses to do their job.
the dissconnect is severe.
to boot they also punish citizens for defending themselves against the results.
in this area hard right is correct but they need to connect the dots. the enemy is not in bagdad the invasion is here.

Grady Hospital was established over 100 years ago to provide care for the poor. When the hospital first opened it's doors, I doubt it's founders ever dreamed that departments would be closing after being sucked bone dry by people who have no business being in our country in the first place.
This woman's attitude it typical. Their rule of the road is grab anything you can get your hands on irrespective of who you harm in the process. And that is why this is never going to work. People with that mindset are simply incapable of functioning in a developed country.

It's a disgrace that such resources that have traditionally been used to assist American citizens who were poor are being taken advantage of by illegal aliens in this way..

On the news, they always talk about how local food banks are suffering from a massive influx of people coming to get food but a shortage in donations.. The sentiment based on what I've heard is that more and more people are increasingly skeptical about donating to charitable causes because illegal aliens and their anchor babies go in like vultures and horde the donations leaving the homeless or disadvantaged American citizen to still have to do without..

You’re right. Their manipulative mindset is ingrained. Even if they were granted amnesty, they would continue to scam the system due to their sense of entitlement, and total lack of respect for our laws. They enter this country with the expectation of using the “stupid” Americans. They think it’s a joke. When people are raised in a culture of corruption. . . . lying, cheating, and stealing become a way of life.

Sadly, she and other like-minded shysters would be the first on the list to be granted an “earned” path to citizenship.

Their lack of any semblance of gratitude is mind-boggling. Who wouldn’t appreciate the generosity of this hospital, other than thieving ingrates? She and others, should be prosecuted for fraud, required to repay the money, and then deported. If they are unable to receive treatment back home, so be it.

In my area they have their own 'hispanic' food bank, just like they have their own 'latino' toy drive at Christmas time. I have a friend who has worked with our local food pantry for a long time. She says they go to 'their' food bank first then come to the community food bank looking for even more. The stuff from the ethnic food bank will be sitting there in their car while they are picking up an additional food box at the food bank everybody uses. I suspect they see this as 'free stuff' and simply do not care if the supply runs out before everyone in line gets a box of food. When no one speaks a word of English, IMO there is a good chance many are illegal.
Giving them amnesty or 'an earned path to citizenship' is not going to change this attitude. This focus on their group and their group only is a cultural trait and is very deeply ingrained. This is not a matter of preferring to speak to each other in their native tongue, wearing a sari or eating different foods. Our country can deal with that and welcomes the infusion of aspects of other cultures. What the US cannot deal with is a large group of people whose only concern is what they can get for themselves at the expense of everyone else.

I love how people say that if we give them amnesty they will be paying taxes. My God! They don't pay taxes they owe in Mexico and it is probably the same in other countries SOB. Tax evasion is a national sport. What on earth makes people think they are going to suddenly start paying their fair share simply because they are US citizens?
