There are Americans who are illegal aliens in other countries. Yes, it happens. And a high percentage of the Americans living abroad illegally are criminals avoiding the U.S. justice system.

When an illegal alien American gets kicked out of a foreign country—say, Mexico—should the U.S. take them back? If the American illegal alien simply gets transferred from a Mexican prison to a U.S. prison it will just be another burden to taxpayers.

Since we don’t really want the American illegals back, I say we make a trade. We could force Mexico to take back 10,000 Mexican illegals for each American illegal we accept back into the U.S. Oh sure, we could make even trades, one-for-one. But the law of supply and demand seems to indicate we should strike a much more favorable bargain.

Any thoughts?

Your plan isn't too clear. Since America is a relatively affluent society, its 'illegals' abroad presumably put little or no 'burden' on the host society; in fact, I'm not sure many countries would WANT to deport American illegals who are 'behaving themselves'...there'd be no strong incentive to do so; their numbers aren't large enough to arouse the anger of the public. On the other hand, there are MILLIONS of foreign illegals here...many who are poor and 'needy', and who compete with American labor. The two groups hardly compare.

On the other hand, if you're proposing exchanging "good" illegals residing here...(non-violent working people) for American INCARCERATED CRIMINALS in foreign lands..then I'd say you'd have a problem. It would never 'fly', and the ACLU and activist groups would stop such a plan before it got started.

Your plan makes some sense, theoretically...but in actual practice? No, I can't imagine its being acceptable.

Maybe we should just start charging Mexico for the illegals here. Send them an invoice each month

That was proposed 15 years ago or so, and formally written up, in regard to indigent patients in California hospitals; for prison inmates, too, once or twice. Some paperwork was actually presented to Mexican officials, who promised to 'study' the matter.

They're still studying.
