Phoenix, Arizona (CNN) -- There's no doubt that there has been much controversy surrounding Arizona's Senate Bill 1070, known as the "Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act," which I voted for last week.
The bill attempts, in part, to give Arizona's local law enforcement the option to question individuals about their legal status and to detain and hand over those individuals who are illegal immigrants to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
In the 1930-1950s the Southwest US used to bring Mexican workers into farms and ranches to do seasonal work. After the season, the workers were shipped back to Mexico
Came the building boom of the 1960-90s. Mexican workers were needed for the booming growth in the Southwest. Arizona alone experienced tremendous growth State wide but the Miracopa and Pinal county areas was unprecedented. Anyone that has driven IH10 Has seen the tremendous growth over the last decades.
Now a stable and ready workforce was needed year 'round. In the Southwest, winter is not a season. Building and production could go year round and did.
Then came the economic bust, jobs dried up. In the past, the group would be rounded up and shipped unceremoniously back across the border. Since the workforce recently had continuous work, they put down roots. This is the prediciment Arizona finds itself in right now.
Arizona believes that if they puts pressure on the "Lone Wolf" alien(meaning the single male that roams the state for work) deporting this type of alien, that the other "family" aliens will pack up and leave the State. Of course this is only theory. Arizona needs to complete the first task, before the second would happen. Arizona needs this measure to pass or for a while its all mute.
This is a good bill and needs to pass. The rest of America is and has been watching Arizona, checking the outcome both politically and looking at the end result of all laws being proposed and enforced. As silly as this may sound; encouraging a state to finally combat illegal immigration and it's detriment to this country, I thank them for having the balls to finally do it. This issue should not even be an issue. Our laws need to just be enforced.
