Clarence Dupnik, the sheriff of Pima County, said there always has been crime associated with smuggling in southern Arizona, but today's rhetoric does not seem to jibe with reality. "This is a media-created event," Dupnik said. "I hear politicians on TV saying the border has gotten worse. Well, the fact of the matter is that the border has never been more secure."
Even Cochise County Sheriff Larry Dever, among the most strident critics of federal enforcement, concedes that notions of cartel mayhem are exaggerated. "We're not seeing the multiple killings, beheadings and shootouts that are going on on the other side," he said.

You are right and furthermore there is a lot that doesn't get reported by the media. The Border Patrol doesn't want to let ALL be known because it would be detrimental to their job. They have a tough enough job as it is and don't want to tip their hand to let people know what they know. Recently there was a HUGE bust because they had been on it for the past three years in order to get the "top dogs". I'm not even sure it made the news but I know about it because I go to a BP website. Of course there are things they aren't allowed to talk about on that website but enough that I know they aren't just sitting on their butts drinking coffee and eating donuts!
