Yes we should offer "a path" but it should be a LONG and HARD path. Each applicant should serve 5 years as a "probationary resident" during which time they will be required to:
1. Work a job and/or operate a business and support themselves and their family members.
2. Pay all taxes due including any past due to all federal, state and local governments.
3. Become proficient in and pass a test on basic conversational English both written and spoken.
4. No unlawful behaviour or association with people that engage in unlawful behaviour. This includes misdemeanors and felonies except for minor traffic offenses (no DUIs).
5. For those under 30, a GED or high school diploma will be required (can be waived by a judge for certain conditions)
After these are completed, the immigrant could then apply for 5 more years of Permanent Residency which is what most immigrants enter as legally. After 5 more years, only then should citizenship be granted.
I smell the creation of another corrupt and inefficient bureaucracy just to keep tabs on a sub-culture of people who have already broken the law.

NO! We should not offer amnesty to illegals. It is unfair to the legal immigrants who worked very hard to enter this country legally. I also think that with 15 million people out of work in this country, we don't need the illegals here to do jobs Americans won't do. Right now, I don't support a temporary work program either because there are too many desperate Americans who are losing unemployment benefits and are struggling to survive in this recession.
If they are working or own a business, give them citizenship if they want it. If they don't give them a work pass. As long as they contribute to the legal growth of this nation's GDP.
Better idea, let's make a trade, hard working immigrants (legal or illegal) for American citizens who are able but unwilling to work.

Good idea. But what about the untaxed billions they send to Mexico? We need to cap that mess also.

There are stories coming out, that Congress is considering bills that offer a "Path to Citizenship" (a.k.a. "amnesty") to the illegal aliens who are already here, and let them stay in the country to work until they get it. Left unsaid, is the fact that millions more foreigners have applied for visas, followed the rules, and are also hoping for citizenship... but remain outside the country. Such a bill was also proposed years go, in 2005/6.

Keep in mind the one thing the illegal aliens have in common. Whether they are Mexican citizens who walked across the border, Norwegian college students who overstayed their visa, Russian sailors who shinnied down the anchor chain in New York, or Saudis who took a little vacation from the diplomatic mission, they are all people who have shown a disdain for American law, and have demonstrated that they are happy to break it.
This is who you want to keep in this country and make American citizens? While keeping out the people who respected U.S. law, obeyed it, and followed the rules?

NO PATH TO CITIZENSHIP. If you think that the Social Security and Medicare systems are in trouble now, just wait til you see them if this new batch of illegals is given amnesty! I have worked with many elderly folk over the course of many years. The ones that seem to qualify for for help (Medicaid, Medicare Savings program, Part D subsidy) with costs are the ones who worked fewer years and limited wages, unreported income. They receive more help over and above what an American citizen who has lived and worked here all of his/her life gets. Until that is addressed, it wouold be another kick in the gut to senior citizens who have lived and worked all of their lives here. With the Baby Boomers in need of these benefits, it would further strain the expectations and obligations that the Federal Gov't owes to its citizens. Citizens FIRST!
Regarding Kev K's comment about making them pay taxes, we have to keep in mind that our tax code is very corrupted with unfair tax breaks like child tax credits, earned income tax credits. If illegals were to file taxes, they might actually get money back instead of paying. It is a fact that 47% of the public already pays $0 Fed Income Tax. That is a national crime. Why make it worse than it already is?
Path to Citizenship? I say we offer them a "Path to a Tacqueria"! If you want to legally stay in this country---then you should at least be involved in something benefiting our country like making tacos!
At minimum could just make me a tasty carne asada burrito---with a side of chips and guacamole on the side and what the hell--let's wash that down with a tasty Jarritos fruit drink! And it that's too much for them to understand--I say we offer the "Path to a Mexican beanfield" option!
