From the video I saw it was a few black clad kids with a penchant for vandalism that did most of the damage during the march---and the grafitti they left was anarchist in nature, no mention of illegal immigration. This same stupidity happens every so often, mostly as a result of the street kids and UCSC student transplants in Santa Cruz. I doubt this really had anything to really do about immigration...

Of course this post will get ignored and everyone will keep talking about illegal aliens on this thread.

Not ignored and thanks for the clarification.

May Day Street Party - Downtown Santa Cruz : Indybay

Here's a quote from a local news source published today about arrests related to the riot:

2 Arrested In Santa Cruz May Day Riot - Central Coast News Story - KSBW The Central Coast (http://www.ksbw.com/news/23436202/detail.html - broken link)

Here is a blogger who witnessed and filmed the event firsthand...
Street Party Turns Violent Santa Cruz Riot of May 2010 kill cactus! A Bay Area Student's Blog

I had friends who were in downtown Santa Cruz the night of the riots and they informed me that they saw no mention of immigration from any of the protesters--that this was basically a riot caused by a few transient anarchist losers...

You people who never even heard of Santa Cruz until yesterday can try to spin this anyway you like--but trying to call this an immigration rally that led to violence is a mischaracterization.
No. I call BS. YOU are the one trying to spin things and ANYONE that promotes ILLEGAL immigration into ANY country is an anarchist.

You people who promote this crap are exploiting cheap labor, emotions, and want to see this country become something other than a first-world status.

Keep up the spin. It ISN'T working. Go tilt at windmills all you want; it won't change a damn thing.

Default Update!!!

So after all, it was premeditated, it was the anarchist group and the FBI is investigating.
Quote:
Police spokesman Zach Friend said investigators believe the attack was premeditated because officers received two phone calls for shots fired and a man down prior to the violent outburst. Friend said the calls appear to have been make to "divert police and fire resources away from the riot."Officers found no problems at the scenes of the diversionary calls, Friend said. Investigators said the rally of about Thomas Williams 250 began as an advertised May Day event for worker's rights was "unsanctioned" and used as "political and physical cover for the organized anarchist group." The night of the riot, a Santa Cruz police officer responding to the downtown gathering was surrounded by demonstrators who jumped on his squad car hood, poured paint on it and pelted the sides with rocks.Investigators will be working with the FBI to identify any individuals on videos pulled from downtown businesses and available online.
Santa Cruz police ask FBI to help investigate what they believe was 'coordinated' attack on the city - Santa Cruz Sentinel story has nothing to do with illegal immigration.

Thanks, Zacatecana.

This title of the thread is misleading...wish that could be changed, or this topic moved.

Well it sure wasn't smart for the illegals to join up with anarchists on a day that in the USA is traditionally anarchists and socialists marching and often rioting. May 1 has always been that kind of day in the USA, as we have our own different kind of Labor Day at the end of summer.

Did the illegals really think the anarchists were going to change how they celebrate "their" day because the illegals wanted to protest their causes on the same day?

I think most people are smart enough to know the difference. May 1 is traditionally, since Cesar Chavez, celebrated as day of the worker here in the US. Rarely, but it is celebrated here in the US and I dont think our country has any problem celebrating multiple causes in one day. Thank God for freedom of speech. On April 22, 2010, we celebrated two causes, "Take your Daughter/Son to Work Day" and "Earth Day". I dont think either group was willing to give up the day and furthermore, I dont even think the anarchists had a permit to rally like others who marched in protest of the AZ law. Anyway, case closed. Its not related to illegal immigration.
