The Arizona immigration law is affecting a girls' high school basketball varsity team in Highland Park.

The team planned to attend a tournament in Arizona in December. They organized bake sales to raise money for the trip until the Highland Park High School administrators decided the trip was off.

District 113 Assistant Superintendent Suzan Hebson told the Chicago Tribune that the trip is off limits because of uncertainty about how the state's new law will be enforced.

Wow, they canceled the trip without asking the students? Politics has destroyed what would have been a very fun trip for some young students. Another example of politics being where it shouldn't because some people can't keep their opinions to themselves. There are no undocumented students on the team. I live near Highland Park, and can tell you that it is a very affluent suburb, so the chances of any of the students being an illegal alien is very low.

They said it wasn't their decision.

dang ! we needed their dollars. Arizonans are crawling on the sidewalks hovering near death due to the boycott. Priests are walking about giving last rites. It could have been prevented, but nnnnnooooooo ! They had to just let us DIE !

This makes sense to me....I know Arizona has a lot of 'rogue cops', and I can imagine the thrill these guys would get by detaining and 'roughing up' an entire girls' basketball team, along with their coaches. They could even get 'tasered', depending on how their chaperones behave...who needs it? Life is short, and basketball, after all, is only a game.

I don't blame the team at all....who wants to spend 8 hours in lock-up on a basketball trip? There are plenty of other places to play. Better safe than sorry.

Better that the team should end up 'tied' in Utah or Nevada, rather than 'Hog-tied' in Arizona.

Hopefully the team will direct their anger and disappointment at the correct source...the superintendant...not the law.
