They may have fired a volley to warn them to stop in order to rob them, and the man was unintentionaly hit. These "pirates" are often teenagers with little competence with their weapons. Just a possibility.

There have been cases where the border guards have been paid to look the other way. It is just the tip of the iceberg. The amount of drugs coming in daily doesn't happen without American collusion. The powerful Fuentes family in Mexico owns many legitimate businesses including trucking. For years many of their trucks just had cursory/paperwork inspections at the border.

The early strategic PGR goal involved outlining the cartel's bribery ties with law enforcement on both sides of the border. According to 1988 PGR intelligence updates, even at this stage the Juarez drug barons were highly active in bribing Mexican officialdom and in securing the paid collusion of American border inspectors. Apparently, one Gustavo Tavo Silvera was a Juarez cartel contact with U.S. Customs inspectors at El Paso's Zaragoza and Sante Fe border bridges -- the Customs officials were paid "$10,000 for each car that was allowed to cross. Each car would sometimes be loaded with as much as 300 kilograms in drugs,"

US border guard gets 20 years for drug corruption | Politics in the Zeros

Martha Garnica was in league with a Mexican drug cartel and allowed large shipments of drugs to pass through the border, mostly by having her or other corrupted guards at a specific aisle at the check point.

First, what someone else says on another bulletin board constitutes opinion in my book, not fact. Anyone can say anything.

Yes there are obviously cases of corruption. As for the case you cited, the key point is they were arrested and got 20 years. When does that ever happen on the other side? Customs rotates inspectors so they never know what lane they will be in. With measures like that and a lot of inspectors who are honest, I don't see how large scale transports of drugs could be occurring at official crossings without multiple busts on a daily basis. I think the majority of imports occur at desolate border locations.

What the f--k?

This is really getting out of control. I hope all the naysayers who thought the wife was looking to get the husband's life insurance money are satisfied now. You know the cartels are involved when they start lopping heads off. These sick bastards really need to be exterminated. We should start executing anyone caught smuggling drugs over the Mexican border, we need to make the Mexicans fear us more then they fear the cartels that way they won't even think about working for the cartels.

Forgive me if someone stated this already, but how were these "tourists" traveling to and from Mexico on jetskies? I would not doubt if Mexican border patrol/police/customs whatever killed the man. Sounds like revenge for the teenager that got shot at the border a few months ago by U.S. border patrol.

Falcon Lake is a wide flooded area of the Rio Grande behind a dam. Americans regularly boated across to fish (with no interception by US or Mexican officials) but jet-skiing to the Mexican side was rare -almost unheard of. The rural Mexican side is a no man's land controlled by the cartels- I doubt that Mexican authorities patrol it or venture into it. An investigator who tried was beheaded. I highly doubt it's revenge for the Juarez killing, it's 700 miles away and there was more outrage on the American side than in Mexico where scores of people were killed in the same week. It's possible it was a drug deal gone wrong but now seems more likely that it was robbery attempt with the gunfire intended only as a scare tactic or warning to stop.

That's terrible. Well - maybe the cartels are now going after Americans for no reason at all. It really makes you wonder why our government insists on keeping all parts of the border so open. It makes you wonder how many of the many thousands who have recently relocated to the USA side of the border might be involved in these cases.

It's pretty sad if this was just an incredibly naive couple that decided to ignore all warnings and decide it would just be a fun time to go into cartel drug running country just to explore or to say they did it.

But I know of a few Americans who still routinely go over to Juarez. They say they aren't afraid.

The bad thing is that it's no questions asked when people from across the border decide to pack up and live on the US side, and we're just crossing our fingers hoping that none of the criminals decide to do so. We just naively figure only the non-criminals would dream of moving to the USA side.
