As a protest against Arizona’s controversial immigration law, the chambers of commerce from Nuevo Laredo to Matamoros have agreed to set May 25 as a “Day Without Mexicans” on the South Texas border.
Business leaders are calling on all Mexican nationals to avoid crossing the international bridges into the United States for any reason, but particularly for shopping, on that day.
“Our action will be united and preventive,” said Emilio Girón Fernández de Jáuregui, president of the Nuevo Laredo Chamber of Commerce.
As have many Mexican officials, Girón Fernández de Jáuregui criticized Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer for criminalizing the lack of documents when “historically, Mexican nationals have left their money in border cities.”
Just one day? They should have been boycotting Arizona everyday since Jan signed the bill.

Quote:
Some Texas civic leaders were concerned about the protest, saying that it wasn’t fair to penalize Texas businesses for something that Arizona had done. Several Texas leaders, including Gov. Rick Perry, have said Texas would not follow Arizona’s lead.
“It’s true that Texas hasn’t adopted such a measure, but we’ve already heard that some legislators are considering carrying a bill that would make criminals out of those without documents,” Girón Fernández de Jáuregui said.
The chamber leader emphasized that Mexican workers in the United States are good people who help strengthen the U.S. economy and have helped it grow.
Sounds like Texas civic leaders have something to fear....hmmmmm.

Great article

When will these ridiculous boycotts end? SB1070 is here to stay unless it is struck down in court. A boycott will do absolutely NOTHING, because Jan Brewer and Arizona is sticking by their guns.

They had a "day without a Mexican" here in SD and it was bliss on the freeways and many local stores. Maybe it's time the US drops the price of corn a bit more? There may be a revolt.

How do they help our economy grow when we are going broke handing out free education and healthcare? It's not making any sense. The hamster needs to get off the treadmill!

I'm very proud of her stand! Listened to her yesterday and she isn't backing down.

Are they accepting requests?...if so, please ask them if they would be so kind as to extend the "Day without mexicans" to perhaps 10 or 20 years without them...maybe even a "Lifetime without mexicans"...They should punish us real bad..make us hurt....we really want to feel it, so I think they should disappear back to their own country for as long as humanly possible...that'll teach us a lesson.

I agree Texas has not followed the same path as Arizona but there are rumors That they are trying to enact a similar law and I think Mexican nationals are trying to prove how much power and contribution the add to the US economy when the come on tourism, shopping, etc.

I don't know the exact figure for Texas but I know Mexican nationals add well over 4 billion dollars to Arizona tourism.
