"My New Kentucky Home" by Peter Laufer

I'm doing some research on illegal immigration in KY and came across this read.

This quote is from an undocumented Mexican:

Quote:
"The problem in the states is too many peoples, you know? If they open the border, everybody will want to come to this country. This country is number one in the world and it's really nice, and I know that this country is nice to everybody, but see, look what happened September 11th because they give a chance to anybody coming here. I don't say that everybody is mean. Some people we are nice, but some people we are stupid."
Also, there are some things in this piece that make me feel like illegal immigrants had/have no idea how many of us feel about them being here illegally. They probably just think that they are only here to work and that we don't mind. I feel like all this time, they just thought we were OK with everything. Notice how the people quoted say, "Everyone is so nice here (Kentucky)." They also mention that some places become target areas for illegal immigrants because the people are "kind."

And even when native workers are interested in the jobs he's offering, Elliott simply prefers to hire Mexicans instead of the available locals. "We had whiteys that could tell you every basketball game in the last ten years: who won, who played, scores. But they couldn't count six 'baccer plants in one pile at any one time. They was 30 workers out of Owensboro here and there wasn't any of 'em could drive a stick shift. Grown men."
Discrimination? Now this is a patriotic man. I wonder what the "locals" think of his hiring practices.

As a new Kentucky resident, I'm well aware of the carefree attitude on illegal immigrants by the state at large. What also doesn't help is Governor Beshear and mayor Abramson of Louisville who could care less. I'm definitely not voting for them if I'm still living here when they run for governor.

While there aren't nearly as many illegals here as parts of Virginia, Kentucky needs to wake up regardless.

You can add our mayor Newberry to the list of those that don't care. Thanks for responding and I agree that they need to wake up.
