" Bad areas " is code language for, mostly, black neighborhoods! As SixFive175's comments prove, racial animosity and mistrust exists in the Peoria area. Bigots scar Peoria's reputation with, exaggerated, crime statistics and fearful images like (above) THIS.

Peoria is segregated like virtually every other city in the U.S. The south side of town is largely black, it is also largely perceived as being the highest crime area in the city, and rightly so.

BUT, is there a correlation between high crime and "racial animosity??" I would argue no.

There is, however, a correlation between high crime on the south side and animosity towards the gang banging thugs (yes, not all are black) that are responsible for lion's share of armed robberies, shootings, etc.

That animosity is shared by whites, BLACKS, hispanics, etc. The good people that live in all neighborhoods hate the minority criminal element that are destroying neighborhoods with their activities.

That is not bigotry, it's reality. I detect no real racial animosity in general in Peoria--sure you always have your idiotic racist element, but they are the minority. The reality is that people want to see the crime situation improve in those "bad areas" and the entire city to be safe and prosperous. That would only improve life for everyone, regardless of race.

I haven't done anything in downtown Peoria. It looks clean/safe from I-74. I like Grand Prairie.

I personally prefer downtown over Grand Prairie any day. Grand Prairie is a sanitized, overstuffed strip mall. Downtown may be a bit gritty but it has it's charms.

One man's opinion.

I live on the East Bluff and it all depends where you are on the East Bluff. There are several areas that are not bad. Mainly they area around the hospitals, and high traffic areas. Because we all know the thugs won't break into a place that has constat traffic going by.

Lake and Prospect is a good area. Grandview Drive is awesome. President Roosevelt called it the "worlds most beautiful drive". The Rivermen hockey team has been a fixture in Peoria for many years. Sports minded kids that hang out with outher sports minded kids amd their families are usually in good companny. Sports minded kids that have no common sense do not belong in Peoria. Sports minded kids who are "mouthy" will find trouble, too. And kids looking for drugs will find them in every city in Amierca. Crime in Peoria isn't any different in any other town of its size. The advantage Peoria has is an awesome Parks Department that offers hundreds of "classes" from A-Z every year at very affordable prices. . The civic center usually has a national act every month all year. Central Illinois as a whole has plenty of outdoor activities incluing hunting and fishing, hiking, boating, camping, etc.. There is Bradley university, Eureka College, ICC Jr, college and Spoor River jr, college in Peoria or within 30 miles. Within 90 miles is two state universities and another jr. college. Does your kid like books" The main library in downtown Peoria is three floors of genealogy, history and good reading.

Peoria is a river town. There is an amazing mix of religion that ranges from fundamental christian to Jewish to Greek to muslim teaching. There is also a medical school. It is a river town and unless your son is blind he is going to find a bar in a restaurant, and he may find a place to get bllind drunk if that is what he is determined to do. The good news is Peoria has a very impressive food and liquor code that is rigorously enforced. There are a wide range of magnificent parks and facilites like Owen Center and lots of activities in Peoria and the surrrounding areq. Make sure he has a phone and that he uses it to call home regularly. You and your son obviously have a good relationship; he'll be okay. If you aren't ok with what he wants to do, do not send him 2000 miles. by himself. .

The best advice you can give him is go to college - he won't always be able to play sports. And attend church of his choice. These are two good social building blocks.
There are all types of social groups that are also social he can join, too. There are four major trauma hospitals in Peoria or nearbyl good doctors and some really good after hours clinics that are open until about midnight most nights.

Peoria is what one makes of it. I lived there forty years and was quite happy. The only thing I would tell your son is to NOT swim in the river and stay ouf of the south side of Peoria-- south of Moss and sw of Bob Michels bridge (includes Jefferson, Adams, Washington and Water Streets) unless there is a very compelling reason to be there. It's a really bad area that has some really folks who can't afford to live any place else. There are a log of nice rentals with really bad addresses that are in very safe heighborhoods, but, you have to live in Peoria long enough to understand what's where.

Yahoo and Google maps are not always right. In fact it isn't that unusual to be mapped to go the wrong direction on a one-way street. SW Jefferson and NE Adams streets in Peoria ARE both one-way for several miles. .

. .
