I was there yesterday. Drove up river road to the apple orchard to pick apples. We crossed the river on the Ferry to come home to Missouri. A fun day.....lots of memories. I use to live in Alton. I can't tell you much about it now, though.

Default Don't recommend Alton

I've lived in Alton the past 4 years and have come to hate the town with a passion. They definitely don't like anyone from anywhere else. There is a lot of history and some fascinating things here but the people are the coldest, unfriendliest, most hate-filled people I've ever encountered and I've lived all over the U.S. Just read a few of the posts from the local paper, The Telegraph, and that will give you some idea. I don't have kids so can't say anything from personal experience but people I know who have kids don't have anything good to say about the local school system. The locals are also quite racist and sexist. Jobs? In retail, restaurants, the casino. Not much else so figure on commuting to St. Louis for anything that pays decently or has a future. The crime rate is also pretty high, lots of drugs, prostitution and things like that. Real estate is fairly reasonable but whatever you save, you will spend commuting. Fortunately, I'm free to leave so that's what I'm doing. Good luck.

There are several smaller communities surrounding Alton that are lovely and friendly. If I ever HAD to leave where I am, I would not hesitate to look in the Alton area. Not IN Alton, but nearby.

Default Haunted?

I've never been there and I would love to visit. I've heard alot about this town, mainly that it is supposed to be one of the most haunted towns in the country.

There are a couple of haunted tours that are quite good. As a place to visit, Alton is fine. There's a lot of history that's very interesting. If you get a chance, look for a book entitled Haunted Alton by Troy Taylor. It has a great deal of history about the town and the immediate area around it. If you can't find the book in a bookstore, Google the title and I think you'll find the publisher and I know he takes orders.

Ha! A neighbor of mine grew up in Alton and we'd stay in that town whenever we go to Rams games on the weekend...

It's a freakin' armpit of a town where the drug and alcohol abuse is rampant. Fun place to visit (esp. Fast Eddie's and some of their downtown bars), but it is not economically strong and the population is dwindling.

Sadly, Alton is not locally considered to be the best place to live and raise a family unless your business is drugs &/or bars. Property is cheap because it's not easy to sell. The hottest local towns are Edwardsville, Glen Carbon, Troy, Highland, etc. They have nice houses, great schools, low crime.

One of the best towns nearby Alton is Godfrey, Illinois---I highly recommend it. My brother and his family lives there for over 10 years and have been very pleased with Godfrey. His children goes to private school.
