Sycamore Illinois Versus Cortland Illinois
Right now, the boom town of the tri-cities of DeKalb, Sycamore and Cortland is Cortland. It is a small farming community with new subdivisions being built everywhere. The prices are still reasonable. To find out more about Cortland, visit Town of Cortland -- Welcome to Cortland!

Theres more growth in Sycamore than Cortland, especially north on Rt. 23 from Rt. 64, and all along Peace Road.
As for schools, I hear theyre ok at best. Theyre not horrible, nor nothing special either. The downtown area is cute, definitely the best in the area. There are great festivals year round, nice parks, a golf course, lots of chain shopping on Rt. 23, things like that. Its not as nice as the suburbs, but not a bad place to live either.

I attended sycamore's annual pumpkin festival in october 2004 and did not have a very good time. The locals were very unfriendly and unsocial to me and it really hurt my feelings. Whenever i said "hi" to someone, they either ignored me or they gave me dirty looks. It is true, however, that sycamore does have a nice downtown area and apparently, it even seems that a few backyards dont have fences. after that not so nice experience, however, I just simply thought; "well, it looks like the whole state of Illinois is one huge social desert." The pumpkin artwork, however, was really cool, certainly a lot of neat designs and stuff.

Sycamore is the county seat and it and dekalb have grown towards each other, so that they have basically met,
i liked sycamore a little better because its downtown is a bit more too it, it being the county seat,
but both are very nice small cities, very interesing area, too bad about the sprawl that is taking this area by storm though.
this area is considered to be a collar county,
meaning its the edge of sprawl, a proto suburb if you will,
soon to be an official suburb. or maybe its just a permanent exurb/suburb.
dont know.

An Answer To 'triton-1', Above
Hello 'Triton - 1':
Do you know what an 'avalanche' diode is in electronics? It is also called a 'Zener' diode. It is very 'open circuited' until the avalanche voltage is reached. Then it conducts with a huge amount of forward current. Well, in comparison people of today are exactly like that diode. In occassional social contact, people are afraid of each other. However, when people learn to trust each other - - then communications open. In the collar counties of the greater Chicago area that also includes Sycamore, IL - - many people have migrated to Sycamore from Chicago in the Domino effect. Backyard neighbors around Sycamore eventually become very good friends but it takes awhile. In Southern Illinois towns, there is much less crime than Chicago. Therefore, it is easier for people to become friends in smaller Southern Illinois communities.
Best Regards,
Carter Glass

Pumpkin Festival although a very fun and interesting event is not a good judge of Sycamore. You have to remember that there are people coming from everywhere so the people being rude to you, may not have even been from the town, or like someone else said not natives of the town.
I think the English program in Sycamore HS is amazing, there are quite a few teachers that have amazing teaches skills. Now there are some flaws in the system too. A lot of things are political even if they don't like to admit it, but I'm not sure if that is exclusive to Sycamore.
