Looking for nice area close to west St. Louis...Collinsville?Alton?Belleville?
We are going to moving in a few months and dh will be working in west St. Louis, close to St. Charles. We are looking for an older, renovated home in a nice area. There seem to be quite a few in Collinsville and some in Alton and Belleville.
Can anyone offer some insight about these areas? I have been told that Belleville is not that great an area since it is so close to East St. Louis. Any thoughts on Collinsville or Alton? HELP!
Thanks,
Nicole

Okay, I read through a bunch of the posts and Alton is out. What about Collinsville? I am not too concerned with the school system since we homeschool but I am looking for a small town atmosphere (suburban to rural) with low crime, a future, and elevating property values.
Any thoughts?

I wouldn't call any of the towns you listed close to St. Charles. Are you sure you want to be on the Illinois side? There are some great gems in Alton and Collinsville. Do you have children? That would play greatly into your selection of a home based on school districts. You will want to be sure to research school districts prior to purchasing. Let me recommend you also look at the town I live in, Edwardsville Illinois. It is right off of I-270. We have some older homes in the LeClaire District and on St. Louis Street. Both districts have local and national historic designations. If you visit the area chamber website, you can see a slideshow that includes pictures of these areas. Here is the link for that website: TheAlliance of Edwardsville & Glen Carbon. Also, Edwardsville school district has an excellent reputation. Let me know if you have anymore questions about the area!

Are you sure that you wanna live on the Illinois side? Not that I'm trying to dissuade you, but your hubby will definitely have a bit of a drive to the St. Charles area...especially considering all the interstate work they're doing right now.
BUT...if the Illinois side is what you're after, there are plenty of homes to choose from. We live in O'fallon, which is near the Belleville area...lovely place to raise a family and the property values are definitely rising! *lol* For us, it's the perfect little town...low crime, EXCELLENT schools, great shopping and restaurants, and close to all the fun stuff in St. Louis. I do think that most of the area towns are comparable to O'Fallon but I have heard that the problems in Belleville are becoming more widespread. That's sad as Belleville is a great little town.
As far as Collinsville and Edwardsville, I've been to each...many times. I LOVE the feel of Edwardsville...has the greatest downtown area and there's always a festival going on. (festivals are BIG all over our area though) I was warned about Collinsville when we first moved to the area...that there are definitely parts of it you wanna steer clear of. That may or may not be true though.
Hope that helps a little bit. I'll try to answer any more questions you have in the future!

Why not live in or near St. Charles itself? Very suburban to rural feel, affordable etc...Plenty of options on MO side out near St. Charles. ....Nothing at all against the mentioned options.

Dh will be working close to the airport - is that St. Charles? One consideration is the income tax benefits of living in IL? Any thoughts?
