I live in the w burbs of CHicago. I've always wanted to buy some land somewhere without HOA's and all that garbabe so I can have a car junkyard in my front yard, maybe get a 4wheeler or some toys like that, have bonfires, etc.

I also have an interest in shpping container homes but zoning in my burbs in chicagoland area would never allow this.

Wondering where in IL I could buy cheap land a few acres the cheaper the better. I'd like to either get a mobile home or ideally build a shipping container home.

Woudl also like something relatively close to chicago as in not carbondale. Say within 3 hours so its somwhere I could actually drive down to after work on a friday night.

I do not think you live in Illinois. If you did you would know that IL is an Ag state and land is not cheap. If you lived in Illinois you would know that most rural counties don't have too many restrictions. If you want to sell junk cars and used parts you'll need at least 5 acres - more is better, and the licenses to set up shop.

People from Chicagoland are totally ignorant to all thing in the rest of Illinois so I have no idea about land prices in wester, easter, southern IL. I know down in Mattoon/Charleston area houses and land are relatively cheap so I know there's gotta be stuff out there.

Also, why would I know about zoning in rural IL?

ALso, where do you get selling junk cars? I don't wanna sell cars I just wanna be able to collect cars, build things, make noise and not have anyone bother me.

You can actually get decently cheap wooded land, since its not useful for farming. It will just have to be quite a way from Chicago.

Check out Illinois, Iowa, Missouri and Minnesota land for sale hunting recreation trophy whitetail deer wild turkey
I love to go there and dream of some recreational acreage that I can't afford at the moment.

Just what it sounds like, a house made out of a shipping container. Can be as simple as one container that's like a single wide, could put a couple together or could make a whole apartment building out of them.

They are cheap at about $2300 a piece give or take. I believe about 3 of them will give you a 1200 sq ft house. Its going to last forever, its recycling and reusing waste and its just a cool look. You use torches to cut out windows and do the inside just like you would a normal house.

That 2nd website shows some pretty cool-looking homes. This is a new one on me! But I'm thinking you might want to stay out of tornado alley?

Best bet for both cheap land and lax regulations would be rural areas at least a 30 min drive from the outermost fringes of the Chicago burbs. Cheapest land would be land outside of any town that's not used for farming (wooded, hilly, etc).

If you want to stay within a 3 hr window of Chicago, that's pretty much anywhere east of the Quad Cities, North of Peoria & B-N, Northern Indiana.

you are talking southern illinois somewhere. however, I don't think that you could get away with that because of zoning laws.
