When people return to Illinois from somewhere 'out west' - - let's say, Arizona or Texas - - they most likely have been using what is known as a "Texas Cooler", "Arizona Cooler" or "Swamp Cooler".

If theyre returning, like you said, Im sure theyre well aware of that. Besides, swamp coolers suck anyways. I dont know why anyone would want to use one (besides the cost issue)...

In the southwest its great to put moisture BACK into the air. Thats why we like the swamp coolers. And I can also have my windows open for the fresh air. Its all in what you want.

Right, but I've never known it, in nearly 30 years, to be necessary to augment summer humidity in IL. It gets dry here, for sure, but not in summer, really. The OP is right, they may be great for drier climates, but here, I can't imagine one would be an asset.
