If you like the feel of a small town, you also have that here. I'll throw in the disclaimer that maybe we'll feel differently after being here a while, but as for now, we find something different every day that makes us appreciate the place a little bit more. Housing is affordable, schools seem to be very good, low crime, clean, and the pace is a little bit slower than a larger city. Again, we've only been here a couple wks, but we would highly recommend it to anyone considering it!!

Oh, and in regards to Chicago: my husband works here in Bloomington but has to go to meetings in Chicago sometimes 1-2 x a wk. No big deal at all; takes him about 1.45 hrs.

Best of luck to you with your decision!
Your husband must drive at the speed of light unless there is a train. It's important to know that even suburbs, like Naperville, can be a 2 hour drive during rush hour.

Yes, the OP has moved on, but the question never dies (even though it gets a little strange). Why are there so many people that like Chicago but don't want to live there? Of course it's expensive - it's a "global city." Does it make sense to commute from 200 miles away? I dunno, all depends what you want to do.

All I know is: if you are 106 miles from Chicago, you better have a full tank of gas, a half pack of cigarettes, and be wearing sunglasses.

People commute from Scranton to New York City too. It's amazing the extremes that people will go to in order to enjoy a high salary with a low cost-of-living.

Our suburbs aren't nearly as expensive as NYC's. Nobody commutes 100+ miles each way to Chicago (not on a daily basis anyway) because it's just not necessary.

Translated as: 'big house' with lawn to weed/mow/bug-spray/put a "stay off MY grass" sign and room to park 2+ SUVs
