2 hours West of Chicago you can have a dandy house on an acre or two for that price. You'll be in farm country, but $200k is totally feasible. LaSalle, Lee, DeKalb counties would all work.

If you lived right off the Veterans Parkway interchange on I-55 in Normal, you could make it to Chicago in about 2 hours. Maybe a little bit more if you are driving to the loop during rush hour from Bloomington/Normal, but that price range you named can get you a decent house with a nice yard down there and B/N is a Very VERY VERY nice clean and safe city which is all new and very upcoming. Check it out sometime.

Oh one more thing, 294 is expected to be ripped up for widening for about the next 3-4 years so plan on unbelievable traffic headed to and from Chicago from O'Hare to the WI state line.

Antioch, IL...right on the border. It's right between Chicago and Milwaukee and 90 minutes to downtown on Metra. There are still affordable houses here, many with access to lakes or the chain. They're not going to be new houses, but they're nice ones! Schools are great, crime rates are pretty low. The downtown is thriving. We have a great Super Wal-Mart, new Menards and future development with Target, Lowes, and Kohls coming in.

Another option might be to get a place close to the Sturtevant (Wisconsin) Amtrak station, and then purchase a 10 trip or monthly pass (if they have either of these) for the Amtrak ride to downtown Chicago.....this is assuming that you are working in downtown Chicago or near it, and it also assumes that you are okay with riding a train to work. Average trip time according to Amtrak's website is only 1 hour and 11 minutes (one of the trains takes 1 hour and 19 minutes).....which is incredibly fast if you think about it. Your drawbacks though are that the trip could get costly, and they're not quite as frequent or late running as the suburban Metra trains. Driving I'd imagine would be a royal pain in the ass, especially if it's to the heart of downtown Chicago.
I'd say another option is try to find a place near terminating point of any Metra line. Steve-O suggested Elburn, which is a good suggestion. Fox Lake would probably be a good one too, and possibly the Elgin (Big Timber) terminating point as well. Good luck!

I don't know that you can find anything for $200K in Elburn any more. I'd suggest looking south to Will County, or north to Kenosha County WI. Kenosha in particular has a Metra station that will whisk you into downtown in about 90 minutes. Manhattan IL to the south in Will County has one too.
It's important to know why you need to be within two hours of Chicago. Is it for commute purposes, or just entertainment/amusement purposes? Because if it's for commute purposes, your range is a lot more limited than if it's for entertainment/amusement purposes where your travel will most likely be done during off-peak hours.

FYI: Kane county is getting kind of expensive. Try Lee county maybe.

A Novel Answer
Dear Friend:
As a novel answer to your question, place an accurate Chicago area map in front of you. Locate downtown Chicago at State St. & Madison St. That is the absolute zero measuring point in reference to the Chicago area suburbs. For example, the Wheaton area has a typical address of about 26W- - -. The 26 of that complete address represents 26 miles from Chicago's zero point reference.
After that, then locate Geneva Illinois. With a drawing - compass - point placed at the zero point and stretched out to Geneva - - then draw an arc completely around in both directions until you touch Lake Michigan at both points. That arc radius is your two hour travel time distance during rush hours, only.
In the Chicago areas, rush hours run from about 05:00 to 09:00 in the mornings. Then about 14:00 to 18:30 in the evenings.
Best Regards,
Carter Glass
