Illinois Has Recognized Tornado Areas
First off, I am NOT a weather man. However, I base my knowledge from observations since I have lived in the Chicago area for about 50 years.
It is not my purpose to recite all of the tornado prone areas in Illinois. But I would like to suggest that a NOAA weather radio would be a very good investment for your family. The best would be a battery operated unit that is crystal or phase - locked - loop (PLL) controled.
Exellent brands such as Midland's model WR -100 and WR - 300 - - also 'Realistic' (Radio Shack) - - are available on eBay.
Back in the 1800s, the mayor of Chicago, "Long John Wentworth" coined Chicago's phrase as "The Windy City". There are two meanings to this phrase. In the case of "Long John Wentworth", he liked to stretch his imagination on things that were not exactly true. Hence, he talked a lot as a poitician.
That same phrase, "Windy City" can actually be taken literally. That's because of the position of Lake Michigan around Chicago. With Vortex wind currents, the Chicago area has nearby suburbs that will NEVER be hit by a tornado. And other nearby Chicago area towns are right in "Tornado Alley".
A NOAA radio will help a family be 'prepared' for any possible weather conditions around Chicago. Also check out "NOAA.GOV" through a Google search.
