I am moving to the Manhattan, IL area.. my boyfriend just got a job in Elwood with BNSF. I was wondering if there was any cheap housing out that way.. We have been out there plenty of times being he has family out that way.. However, we are having trouble finding a place.. We don't mind moving to wilmington or a surrounding area.. However, I was wondering if anyone had any tips at all or knew of anything. Thank you..

All depends what you are looking for in an area- check out mokena, tinley, orland , frankfort, crete, monee as well all within a realistic drive to manhattan
kankakee , bradley may be some options for you as well

It depends on what size town you are looking for and what you want to be able to do.

Elwood is getting nicer. Wilmington is good. Braidwood cops seem to have something to prove and they have the traffic light from hell. Coal City is nice, bigger. Essex, South Wilmington, and Gardner are very small.

It all depends on what "cheap" means to you.

Manhattan was going to be the next growth area for the Chicago suburbs until the market crashed. Metra even extended service there. You ought to be able to find something, especially on railroad wages.

I grew up in Manhattan, as did my wife. I know (and work with, as I'm a mortgage lender) the most active real estate agents in that area .. and the surrounding areas. They would be able to help you find something in your price range, whether it would be for a purchase or rental. My suggestion is to contact one of them. Tell them your price preferences, housing needs, budget, etc. .. and let them provide you some choices for consideration. Contact me for a small list of agent names to contact, if you'd like to pursue this. I'll be glad to help, if I can ... Best of luck no matter your decision. And enjoy Manhattan! It's a great little town ..
