Default New Illinois law requires photo ID to buy drain cleaner

You'll need to show an ID next time you buy Drano or Liquid Plumr in Illinois. The State of Illinois now requires anyone who buys drain cleaners and other caustic substances to provide photo identification and sign a log because a couple of people recently tossed the chemicals on two women, badly scarring them. This could be carrying the security thing just a bit too far. New Law Requires Photo ID To Buy Drain Cleaner « CBS Chicago (http://tinyurl.com/7vk95j9 - broken link)

Let's see... what other common items have people been maliciously injured with that we can require ID and create a registry for? How about...
  • a baseball bat registry

  • a kitchen knife registry

  • a bowling ball registry

  • a brick registry

  • a car battery registry

  • a railroad tie registry
I hate stupid "overreaction" laws. For what it's worth (very little), this law doesn't apply to common off-the-shelf-strength cleaners like the Drano you find at Dominick's, but to some of the super-strength stuff you'll find at Lowe's and Home Depot and what-not.

I laughed i knew Pat Quinn was stupid but this law is just hilarious and its stupid.
Lol we have all these rewards on America's Funniest Home Videos for stupid stuff we should have a State VS state award and see which state comes up with the most stupid law within a year.
Now that would be interesting.

This new law is totally absurd. I imagine groceries and pharmacies will not bother to carry the product any longer (due to the paperwork). It perhaps will be necessary to go to an actual hardware store. Truly an overreaction.

Thanks for the update Drover, sounds like there's going to be a lot of confusion on this. CBS 2 Chicago, showing a bottle of Liquid Plumr, made no mention that only certain strengths of drain cleaner will be regulated. The Times in Ottawa reports, "According to the Illinois Food Retailers Association, among the products included are Drano Crystals, SnoBol Liquid Bowl Cleaner, The Works Drain Opener, KaBoom Bowl Blaster Toilet Cleaner and Vam-Sol High Acid Bowl Cleanse." You can blame the ignorant meth heads for this law too.

We had to see a photo ID and have the person sign a sheet before we could sell them starting fluid in our store too....we finally quit selling it due to the fact that it was to big of a hassle just to make 90 cents or less.

Hmm.

When SnoBol is outlawed only criminal will have clean toilets.

I wonder if the moronic lawmakers that pass these sorts of laws have allies in the censors that would delete criticism of such pointless regulation...
