Hi Louane! I lived in Herrin from a toddler to about 8yrs old...I am now 46 and was just wondering if it still has a small town feel to it. I was really too young to appreciate it then of course.... I would love to go back and see if the street I lived on is still there and the house we lived in. [yes believe it or not I still remember the street address!!]
I went to a school called West Side School elementary....
Will look forward to hearing from you again! Take care and thanks for responding...by the way,, do you like Herrin?

Hi Louane! Thank you for your info! No, I don't remember a Hungry's...but I just may have been too young to remember it. That's good that it still has a home town feel to it. It's nice to know that some things don't always have to change! I like Wal-Mart too, but like you I am not fond of the supercenters....way to big for me. I guess I prefer everything from town, church and my walmarts on a smaller scale! I don't know how I have ended up living in a huge city like Phoenix for so long....
I would like to visit there sometime, for nostalgia and who knows, maybe make it my home again this time as an adult!
Take care and thanks for responding, have a great day!!

I lived in Herrin from the age of 4 until 24 and then moved to Florida, Ohio, and back to Florida...anyhow.
I remember Hungry's.. it use to be Big Daddy's across the street from Borens IGA and then it moved next door.. It was owned by Clifford Coleman, he was killed in a car accident..
B&J's, Moo & Cackle (now/was Don's Drive-in), Burgernook, and Dairy Queen. and Chuck's BBQ were the "hot spots"..Shooting the loop was the big thing to do.. (you drive from Kroger through town to Brewster's Ford dealership and back). Went to Kendergarten at West Side, then we moved to the East side of town and I went to Lincoln.
Anyhow.. I'd just DIE if I had to move back there today, I have lived in Florida for 20 years now and I don't think I could handle that slow of a life style. My dad and his wife and my sister still live there and they say it is really GHETTO... no jobs, just a lot of nothing.....

Marion is the big story in southern Illinois, it grew by 1000 people from 2000-2006. That's a huge change for being a town of only (now) 17,000. Marion to Carbondale (the whole stretch) is growing in leaps and bounds.
