Machesney Park (near Rockford) was named after a mall, which was named after an airport. Both the airport and mall are gone.

Milledgeville was named because there was a 'mill' at the 'edge' of the town.

Some other interesting names:

Chemung
Chicago (pretty unique if you think about it)
Dalzell
Mahomet
Minooka
Pistakee Highlands

I challenge Roachtown. I find no information to indicate it is a town, village or city in the State of Illinois. It may well be an unincorporated place - which means it is not recognized by the Federal Government as anything except a parcel of land in some township in St. Clair County.

According to the towns listed on my official Illinois map from 2007-08, only Normal, Oblong, Effingham, Havana and Cairo are listed. Oskaloosa is in IOWA. Not sure where or how you got the others. Your Grand Detour of town names in IL is for the Birds. Now get Normal and get some accuracy going before we accuse you of spending too much time in Roachtown getting Oblong.

Benld. Named for founder Benjamin L. Dorsey.

Once on a road trip I won a bet with someone who swore the name had to be Benid, not Benld.

Nice try Buddy.
RELAX and stop acting like a 12yr old! I thought this thread is suppose to be fun looking for strange names, unincorporated or not, if I were wrong in the posting, ok fine point it out, but you don't have to start accusing me of anything, so stop being another dumb arse in this forum and take your finger out of your nose.

Before you start mocking me with my posting, why don't you prove it. OP never mentioned whether it had to be an unincorporated town or not.

1.Grand Detour in Ogle County,Il - Grand Detour, Illinois - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

2. Birds in Lawrence County, Il - Birds, Illinois - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

3. Oskaloosa in Clay County,Il - Oskaloosa, Illinois - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

4.Roachtown in St.Clair, County IL - Moderator cut: link removed, linking to competitor sites is not allowed
"Roachtown is a populated place located in St. Clair County at latitude 38.463 and longitude -90.041.
The elevation is 541 feet. Roachtown appears on the Millstadt U.S. Geological Survey Map. St. Clair County is in the Central Time Zone "

So like I said, take your finger out of your nose buddy.
Anything else you wanna say

Kickapoo and Roachtown seem to have the same problem. They are places in unincorporated counties that have no official state designation. They are not recognized by federal or state officials as a town, a city, or a village, and therefore are not privy to privileges such as an official title. "These are just folks "living in the County.".

The topic is: strange names for Illinois towns -- this would include the City of West Peoria, the Town of Urbana, and the Village of Morton. It does not include unincorporated places. BTW, the City of West Peoria was an incorporated place in the County of Peoria for over 100 years before it applied for the "City" designation and was granted same by the State of Illinois.

Of course the author of said thread has the option to request a title change to: Odd names for Illinois towns and places which would then include kickapoo and Roachtown and maybe Buzzville. .

At one time schools that trained teachers were called normal schools.
