Yes, Harvestores are "vacuumed packed". Usually though silage is not made from just grain, but from the whole plant. The sealing creates a fermentation process which actually acts as a preservative (but if over done silage can also poison). In human terms, you could think of sauerkraut as a form of silage. Its the same basic process used on cabbage to produce sauerkraut as on the corn plant or grass plant to produce silage.
Silos by their nature create these vacuum seals. Harvestores just do a more through job of it. Kankakee County still has a pretty good ag base. Some backwards, but good rich high rated soils in part. Can purchase soil survey from County(had one that was 25 years old when I left), compare soils there and south in Iroquois Counties before buying.
