Champaign is not a Chicago suburb. It's a couple hundred miles southeast. If you want good schools and safe areas look in the area surrounding Champaign in small towns such as Monticello or Mahomet. There will be plenty for you and child to do in Urbana and Champaign when you are not at work.

You are moving from the east coast into the heart of Illinois farmland. It is a new way of life.

The general rule I'd give you, if you are looking in Champaign proper, is to try to stay south of Hill and west of State. That's not to say all areas outside that are bad. Truth be told, even the "bad" parts of Champaign are pretty mild. Its just that things tend to get nicer the farther west and south you go. (The rule gets a little sketchy from ~Springfield and ~Kirby as the student apartments sometimes spill over a bit west of State).

Wherever you live in Champaign, you're daughter will be assigned a public school randomly. It could be the school right down the block or it could be across town.

If school quality is a major concern, you'll should check out Mahomet, Monticello, or St Joseph. It can be more difficult to find rental units in those areas, however.
