a few more choice examples of our WASP forefathers butchering other languages in this state:

Cairo (yes, it is a city in Egypt)
Des Plaines (wrong, wrong)

oh, there are just too many more to go into.

However, what I think the frenchies & Illinoisans would agree on is you don't pronounce the "s," ever!

I've heard white trash from downstate and the MO side of the river say this in all seriousness, but never anyone elsewhere in the country I don't think.

No, it's not bothersome. Hell, at U of I basketball games when they sing "Hail to the Orange," everyone in the arena throws an extra-loud "sss" at the end of the state's name for fun. (1:12 mark in the video below)

Doesn't bother me, it also didn't bother me when people would say "Wes-consin" when i lived there. I just laugh about it.

They love it up there when you drop the old South Side Chicago pronunciation on them (Wiz-GAHNNN-zen)

As usual the problem is the English language. In most cases the "s" is plural and should be heard. In the case of Illinois the "s" is silent. Therefore the end sounds is "oy" as in 'oy vey' or 'annoy'. I can't begin to guess the number of teachers and parents who never learned.

While I find the pronunciation of the s annoying, I find it far more irritating when people think our state starts with an E. We do not live in Ellinois. But the bonus is when they use the e and the s at the same time.
